We did ok against Brazil in 94, I even think we had a one man advantage against Brazil, but Brazil still won 1-0. But at least we were competitive in that game.
Also if the US does better than Mexico, that is also success for the US. Mexico still may not make it out of their group.
And yet, FIFA will still find some way to change the rules for the 2010 World Cup to ensure that Mexico gets a seeded position instead of the US.
Statistically, the match has evened out quite a bit as Togo presses for a badly-needed goal -- they must get at least a draw to stay alive, so no time to play defensive for them.
The only real Group of Death is the one with Argentina, Holland, Ivory Coast and Serbia. Despite their thrashing the other day, Serbia aren't a bad side. Holland and Argies are among the favourites to win the whole competition, let alone the group.
Thanks for the ping!
Switzerland 2:0 Togo
Swiss-italia goal Barretta 2-0.
Svizzera leads group now with 4 points, plus 2 goal diff.
I predict a Swiss-Korea tie, France goes home.
Why would France go home? If they beat Togo comfortably, which they should, surely they go through on goal difference if the other sides draw.
Ah yes, France surrenders again!
you're right. If France beats Togo by 2 goals they would advance and Korea would stay home. Nice that the games will be played concurrently.
Zidane is out of the Togo match, because of two yellows. France will not score enough goals, even if they beat Togo.
Stick a fork in Les Bleus.
OMG! The Swiss coach is VP Cheney! Maybe Switzerland is the undisclosed location?
lol
Just checked that Suisse and Korea will play to win in order to avoid playing Spain in the second round. The group winner will play either Saudi, Tunisia, or Ukraine.
I'll drink to that outcome.
Don't see it myself though. They are too good not to qualify from what is an ordinary group. They'll probably beat Togo by two or three goals. That means they qualify, regardless of the outcome in the other match.
Losing Zidane will mean France are forced to use a player that might actually be able to play alongside Thierry Henry. Although their team is a mess, they shouldnt go out as Togo are an even bigger shambles.
I read that Henry does not like Trezeguet, and that is why he is on the bench.
Possibly true. Sounds a bit like France are doing a Holland and sniping at each other. Trezequet wasnt necessarily who I had in mind though. Its the old legs behind Henry that are the problem.
