The Saudis should have spent their money funding soccer programs instead of paying guys to fly airplanes into skyscrapers.

They also need to get over not letting their players compete in Europe. It's led to major embarrassments two world cups running now.

OK, here’s my rant: offsides.

There are many exciting plays whistled dead because of the offsides call. Often, the replay shows that the call was incorrect, and a goal or near-goal is nullified.

It seems clear that it is very difficult for the referee’s assistant to make the call properly, as he has to look in two places at once—at the ball being passed, and simultaneously at the players nearest the goal line.

They could do it like this: the referee’s assistant, if he sees what he thinks is an offside play, raises his flag but does not blow his whistle. Play would continue. If a goal is scored, look at the replay.

Alternatively, there was the rule from the old U.S. league from the 70’s, that no offsides would be called within 25 yards of the goal.

Comments?

People got caught up in the Spain hype forgetting the refs destruction of half the game. Ukraine destroyed the Saudis and the ref was British and did an excellent job.

Togo players will take asylum in Germany as no checks are coming.

Zidane did nothing. Uh no, Zidane ran over a guy and pushed him for no reason on a dead play.

Typically French and rewarded for the terrible behavior. He has no one to blame but himself.

Payback for Spain electing Zapatero.

Mixed day for Osama bin Caveman -- on the one hand Saudi Arabia was crushed again, but Tunisia is retaking Andalusia!

Typical Yank.

Always going on about changing the rules :-)

That said, I am getting ready to accept video refereeing on goal situations.

Fury in Egypt over Ghana's Israeli flag waver

Sadly, I suspect he'll be targeted by the ROP for that.

You're right about Zidane needless foul running up on a guy from behind and fouling him.

ON A DEAD PLAY.

Idiot!

I just read that the Fenchie keeper is calling for more refs on the field, although he opposes video replay.

I missed the first Spain game. Only caught the last 15 minutes. Caught the nice goal by Torres though.

Spain's win not so impressive with the ref's aid for the game and today's result at halftime now.

Well, the purpose of the offside rule is to prevent forwards from "goal hanging" and poaching goals, so the NASL rule is kind of silly in my opinion.

I like your idea about using video replay a lot though. Pass it on to FIFA.

I've always thought the rule should be changed to allow players to be five yards beyond the last defender and still be onside, leaving it up to the linesman to determine where five yards is. In other words, if the linesman determines that the attacker is at least making an effort to stay close to the play (and not goal hanging) he can judge him onside.
