Italy-U.S. Gets High Overnight TV Rating It's Best for World Cup Match Since 1998 Final

AP

NEW YORK (June 18) - The ratings for the 1-1 tie between the United States and Italy on Saturday got the highest overnight rating for a World Cup game on ABC since the 1998 championship game.

The game, which began at 3 p.m. EDT, got a 5.2 rating, the highest since the '98 final between Brazil and France got a 7.0.

The 2002 World Cup was held in South Korea and Japan, meaning most of the games were on in the middle of the night or in the very early morning.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether or not they are in use.

10 fouls and a team is down a man?

Forget any tackling then. The Weltmeisterschaft would go to the best divers and actors.

So, basically 1 out of 20 US homes watched the match? It's a start...

You bring up a point, the refs would have to punish diving for it to work. But I think it would definately open up the game. The problem I have is that fouling benefits the fouler, since there really is no penalty, unless it's close to the goal, and they get a resulting free kick out of it. It adds strategy to the game, you have to pick your spots as to when to foul.

I guarantee Super Bowl-like ratings if the US ever made the Final, people would watch out of curiousity. Sports bars would be packed to the gills, watching parties, the whole nine yards.

A 5.2 rating is equivalent to over 5.5 million households, or around 13 million viewers.

Add to that another 3-5 million viewers on Univision!

Yeah, but 90% of them don't show up in the official population surveys. :)

Heck most of the Univision viewers don't even speak Spanish, they just watch for the chicks.

World Cup TV Ratings Are More Than Double

AP

BRISTOL, Conn. (June 16) - The ratings for the first 14 World Cup games on ESPN2 have more than doubled from four years ago.

The network averaged a 1.3 over the first 14 games, as opposed to an 0.6 from 2002. Those games were aired in the middle of the night because of the tournament being held in South Korea and Japan. This year's World Cup is in Germany, meaning the games are on early in the morning or the early afternoon.

ABC broadcast three games from the tournament's opening weekend. The network's broadcasts last weekend, none of which included the U.S. team, drew an average overnight rating of 2.8, a 65 percent increase over the network's average from two matches during the opening weekend of the 2002 World Cup.
