Don't get me wrong, we had goodies. My dad makes a killer banana cream pie. The difference is he actually made it from pie crust to filling. No extra crap that you get when buy it pre-made.
I had recently begun making my husband real banana cream pie too. Although, disclaimer here, I bought the crust. It is so much better--and not hard to make. Just have to stir that custard awhile. I love the fact that your dad snuck the sugar cereal while you were at camp. I find that hilarious! It saddens me that my husband can't eat it anymore. Diabetes runs in his family--his grandmother lost her legs to it and his aunt starved herself to death with it. But we're learning that there's good things that he can eat--and we need to make them from scratch, not a hard thing to do.
