NJ assemblywomen call for boycott of new Coulter book

TRENTON, N.J. - Commentator Ann Coulter's incendiary words about outspoken 9/11 widows have led two state lawmakers to calls for a boycott of her book in the widows' home state of New Jersey.

Assemblywomen Joan M. Quigley, D-Hudson, and Linda Stender, D-Union, on Thursday called on New Jerseyans to stop buying the book, "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," and for retailers in the state to stop selling it.

"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books. By making these claims, she proved herself worse than those she is attempting to vilify - she is a leach trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others," the two assemblywomen said in a statement.

A spokeswoman for Crown Forum, the publisher of Coulter's book, did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday.

In her new book, Coulter writes that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands perished in the World Trade Center act "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them."

She also wrote, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much."

The comments drew criticism Wednesday from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who said the book should be called "Heartless," and New York's Republican Gov. George Pataki, who said he was stunned by the remarks.

Coulter appeared Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show and stuck by her stance, saying the women used their grief "to make a political point."

Her criticism was aimed at four New Jersey women she dubbed "The Witches of East Brunswick," after the town where two of them live.

The women - Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg and Patty Casazza - have spent the years since the 2001 terror attacks supporting an independent commission to examine government failures before the attack. During the 2004 presidential race, they endorsed Democrat John Kerry.

What about the children of the troops? How is this in any way better than the left?

The troops are just doing their duty and the left regularly calls the murderers and worse. These women leaped into the spotlight all on their own. If their kids are hurt by it, they should have considered that first. These women asked for the spotlight. The troops volunteered to give their lives that these vicious witches could freely HAVE that spotlight. And yet, whose kids are YOU worried about?

I'd bet that Hilliary quietly had something to do with trotting them onstage as soon as they were up to it....the appeal of victimhood is something Hilliary nas a nose for and alwaysendeavors to exploit...

"She accused him of "insulting" her when he suggested that she decided to go after the Jersey Girls to sell books."

Ann needs to insult a bunch of 4 rabid, but irrelevant witches from Joisey to sell books?
Who knew?
Exactly when is the last time anyone paid any attention to these nobodies again, apart from when the RATS Party shamelessly used the nasty shrews for attack ads in 2004?

Every single book Ann has brought out has been a best seller, long b4 the 4 witches lost their husbands on 9/11.

'nuff said.

"And the reaction PROVES her point."

And it shows them to be humorless hypocrites. Ann must be having an AWESOME time reveling in all this!

"Might be a good idea to read that chapter to find out."

Yeah, I guess so. Seems to be a lot of others here though who havn't read it yet who are standing behind her comments. I read a quote. If the quote is inaccurate that's one thing. Someone said it was out of context so they must know the context.

Thank you for a voice of reason in a sea of undeserved Coulter adolation. I share your disgust over the vile comments Ann has made this time out, and from other responses I've gotten, many freepers feel the same.

Her comments are not disgusting-- they are not politically correct, which makes them just fine. The Jersey Crones have long spread their vicious lies with impunity and it's about time they are stripped of their immunity. By the way, I listened to Laura today. She said that she wouldn't have couched it in such terms, but never used the term "disgusting" or denied the essential truth of Ann's assertion.

Ditto that. I had sympathy for that particular wing of the 9/11 families, until they complained about the level of compensation. Money-grubbing nitwits, some of them. They wore out any good will they had with me.

You think these kids aren't going to hear this? It's been on The View, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and FNC as well as the internet and talk radio and in at least our local newspaper and probably some larger newspapers as well.

Yes, it's too bad children suffer.

Perhaps the spectacle of their suffering will cause another mother somewhere down the road to pause before embarking on a moonbat journey.

They've got a lot of nerve, since most leftist women don't even qualify as ugly men.

I wonder what the reaction would be if a Republican government official anywhere went public with an encouragement for people to avoid Al Gore's crappy movie, or Michael Moore's crappy movie, or Al Franken's crappy radio show, or Joe Wilson's crappy book.

Those works are FILLED with lies and deception, and yet no elected Republican that I know of has come out and told people to "boycott" them--and yet, the left is so terrified of Ann Coulter, even their elected officials get their panties in a knot over her prose.

I love it.

Disgust over what? Over her refusal to be cowed by PC? Her refusal to let liberals take over the debate using "immune victims" to silence conservatives and put out propaganda unmolested? Ann is breaking down the PC barriers to expose their sham.

Ann Coulter would have been on solid ground if she had stuck to criticizing some of the outrageous political activities of the 4 women, such as how they grossly politicized the 9/11 Commission to help make it a Bush-bash instead of an objective search for facts and understanding. The issue should be about how THEY wrapped themselves in 9/11 to try to make it a (dishonest) talking point for the Democrats.

Unfortunately, by making nasty personal attacks on the women's marriages, etc. Coulter has made the controversy all about her nasty remarks rather than about the actual political behavior of the 4 women. It's both wrong and counter-productive. It may sell books for Ann Coulter but it does not help to advance the debate in an intelligent manner.

My reaction was that Ann was pointing out that we don't know if their husbands would approve of what they're doing now against the President, or even if they had radical disagreements with the wives when they were alive. Yet the wives have now become the sole representatives of their husbands after their husbands are dead and can't say anything.

As much as I dislike these women, I've never heard them say they're speaking for their husbands. It is none of Ann's business whether their husbands would have approved or not, and it is the height of macabre cruelty for her to bring these dead men into a discussion that should be about political views, not speculation about their marital status had they lived.

Coulter's just being mean. That's her personality. When Harriett Miers was nominated, she called her "dumb" for going to Southern Methodist, a "cleaning lady," called for Bush's impeachment on former boyfriend Bill Maher's show, and suggested that Bush had gone back to drinking again.

Those who say she is defending Bush against the Jersey Girls should remember her remarks about him in the Harriett Miers nomination. They were as mean and as personal as she could get.

That's why Coulter's not married: men picture themselves on the receiving end of that and want no part of it.

Um, no.

One need not know the context to declare a quotation out of context. By definition, all quotations are "out of context."
