To nail the case, they used an electron microscope to show that the resin was pitted with craters after being semi-digested by the fungus. Pits should have been visible to the naked eye with enough time. Something that is real good at pitting plastic is house cat urine (after a while it is impossible to scrub the bottom of the litter box clean any more).

Depends on the size of the pits and how big they can grow. Micropits would be invisible on a textured plastic. And they would ultimately make the surface hazy, but the pits themsleves would still be invisible.
