Bush Shuns Republicans' Stand to Return Illegals(W still doesn't get it!)
The Washington Times ^ | June 2, 2006 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 06/02/2006 3:46:47 PM PDT by kellynla

President Bush yesterday rejected House Republicans' stance that illegal aliens must return home, calling it "wrong and unrealistic" and saying many will have to be allowed to stay.

Speaking to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a block from the White House, Mr. Bush also directly challenged businesses to hire only legal workers, and said those that don't should be prepared to face increased fines. In addition, he said both the House and Senate will have to compromise, but said voters expect a bill and he said that bill should tackle both enforcement and a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens.

"The difficulty of this task is no excuse for avoiding it," he said.

Mr. Bush was making his first in-depth comments since the Senate passed its broad immigration bill last week, setting up a showdown over immigration policy with the House, which passed an enforcement bill in December.

Last Friday, and again on Sunday, Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., Wisconsin Republican and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said he cannot accept any approach that allows illegal aliens to stay in the country with the government's approval.

"The words 'path to citizenship' is a buzzword for amnesty. We ought to be honest -- it is amnesty," Mr. Sensenbrenner, a key House negotiator, said on NBC's "Meet the Press" program. He contends that more enforcement against employers would make it hard for illegal aliens to get jobs, encouraging them to go home. But Mr. Bush dismissed that argument.

"Listen, I appreciate the members are acting on deeply felt principles. I understand that. Yet I also believe that the approach they suggest is wrong and unrealistic," he said.

Exactly - NO new LAW is the best course of action

If it's anything other than an enforcement only bill, I agree with you.

But don't you agree that we need to increase the penalties for hiring illegals and require document verification?

And now for the river:

"(B) IMPROVEMENTS TO ESTABLISH SECURE SYSTEM. -- To the extent that the system established under subsection (b) is found not to be a secure system to determine employment eligibility in the United States, the President shall, subject to paragraph (3) and taking into account the results of any demonstration projects conducted under paragraph (4), implement such changes in (including additions to) the requirements of subsection (b) as may be necessary to establish a secure system to determine employment eligibility in the United States. Such changes in the system may be implemented only if the changes conform to the requirements of paragraph (2).

"The birth rate in the U.S. today is slightly below replacement levels. For many industrialized nations, low birth rates are a huge long-term demographic problem. Thanks to immigration, our demographic problems are less severe than in Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France, to name a few. As the Baby Boomers begin to retire in 10 years, America will need young workers through immigration more than ever. "

You are certainly right. That's why I should be allowed to import as many well educated Russian and Ukrainian engineers as I want. But of course that isn't what this is about, it's all about reconquista, only ill educated Mexicans are allowed to border jump because of white guilt.

No new law and American soldiers on the southern border is the best course of action.

.....and why isn't anyone talking about the millions MORE who will come into the country legally after amnesty is granted....i.e. the wives, parents, siblings, children and grandchildren who will be sent for immediately by the amnestied ones.. They'll all be let in on humanitarian grounds and given citizenship also.

Then half of them will send for THEIR chain relatives and then when these newbies get citizenship on humanitarian grounds they'll send for THEIR chain relatives and then..........

A person or entity has complied with the requirement of this paragraph with respect to examination of a document if the document reasonably appears on its face to be genuine.

Therein lies the problem: current law allows employers to take documents presented to them at face value. And the burden lies on the government to prove that the document does not "reasonable appear" to be genuine.

It's really easy to get a fake social security card and driver's lisence that "reasonably appear" genuine.

"How can we better assimilate immigrants and make them good Americans. "

No, it is "How can they better assimilate if they want to live here." Sorry Charlie, this is one of those jobs Americans won't do.

Sure.

Amnesty means without penalty.

Bush's plan involves penalties to illegals in order to enter the legal flow to citizenship.

Check out the river card. Simpson Mazzoli contains everything needed to improve on emolyer reporting and id's. They have just chosen for the past 20 years to ignore it. They will ignore the next bill for 20 years as well.

The executive can secure the southern border right now. They choose not to. They have chosen not to since 1986 and beyond. They will continue to choose not to until Americans wake up from their mind numbed slumber.

I really think Bush believes in what he's doing. I can't understand why, but it's the only explanation I can think of that fits the facts. BTW, what do you think his true motivations are?

There's a twelve lane highway in the works from Laredo, Mexico/Texas straight north into Canada...The highway starts on the Pacific coast in Mexico...Follow this link...

It's my view that the 'President' will get his illegal invasion bill with, or without Congressional approval...Whether it be thru Executive Order or a new Treaty...This is by far bigger than an immigration bill...But the immigration bill is necessary to carry out the scheme...

I can tell you there are more possible RICO cases in California waiting for the Mohawk decision due at the end of June. The trial lawyers here are salivating, some already investigating companies......Tyson foods is also being sued by the same lawyers in Mohawk..going to trial in 2007

That is one big reason why big money is being spent to pass amnesty for employers and throw in the illegals along with it......We are being sold out..one reason the Senate would come up with such a crap bill...

If amnesty pases, Immigration Lawyers will benefit, if it doesn't and Mohawk RICO holds up, the Trial Lawyers will be feasting..Tough to root for lawyers, but this time around I'd prefer those taking illegal employers down instead of Immigration Lawyers...

No - not at the risk that our House members would have to eat a big dose of Amnesty to get it in the Conference Committee.

Well, I agree. But it appears the House is hanging tough on the amnesty.

Take note - The Senate will NEVER give in to Strong Border Security and Strong Employer Sanctions without getting a big WAD of Amnesty in return. Plus amnesty for employers too.

I'm not so sure. If by some miracle we got it in front of the Senate, it would be very hard to vote no. I mean, just about ever senator is on record as supporting more enforcement. Voting no on enforcement would be very difficult politically, even for a weasel like McCain. But maybe I'm being irrationally optimistic.

There is no expectation that the House could get strong border security / employer sanctions without giving away the store full of amnesty. Not acceptable to me.

Not acceptable to me either, but I'm not so sure it's impossible for them to strip out the amnesty part in conference. They've got to hang tough, and knowing the public supports them, I think they will. Maybe I'm putting too much faith in them. I don't know.
