The officer was Lt. Bushyhead. If you google Lt. Bushyhead a lot of articles come up about the incident. I read a book on it, and according to the book General Patton asked him if he was responsible. Lt. Bushyhead admitted responsibility. General Patton tore up the court martial paperwork but told Lt. Bushyhead not to do it again.

Good thing. My Grandfather was an MP in Patton's Third Army and was of those who took care of these guards. Of his actions, he had no regrets whatsoever.
