Agreed. Steinbeck's books are great reads (had to read Of Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath in high school).
Trouble is though, they've been challenged because they're not politically correct and don't fit in at all with the social engineering the Libs/Socialists/Communists who control the education establishment seek to achieve...
And that's strange because a lot of people think Steinbeck had socialist leanings. "Fat Tuesday" and "Of Mice and Men" are two of my favorites - especially since I went to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey where most of the action takes place (even had a great bar named, "Doc Ricketts" there!)

Actually, some think Steinbeck's Grapes was a liberal/socialist manifesto of sorts. I think they are reading their own dreams into to the book, but not all classic works of fiction are criticized by liberals. They just put their own spin on it and go forward. They may not have a lot of use, however, for early western civ philosophy.
