I'm speechless at that news.
Your police chief criticized the chief public prosecutor, on the grounds that illegals won't report crime if they're found out to be illegal??
I can't say I'm shocked to hear about this in North Carolina. I did research and found ominous info about your fate.
According to this story, the beat cop did what (IMO) she should have done, and the police chief apologized to the (latino) community for the officer's doing of her job with such fine attention to detail. The law enforcement folks here don't seem to care about your residency status if you're a crime victim, and I suppose I can see their point.
Mecklenburg District Attorney Peter Gilchrist said it's sometimes necessary to overlook a victim's residency status in order to gain a conviction.
(i.e. "when it's conveeenient.")
After all, the ability of the USCP shift supervisor to overlook certain details surrounding Patrick Kennedy's late-night collision certainly helped Patrick's situation, didn't it? And he is seeking treatment now, so perhaps that was a favorable outcome for all concerned, although those of us who expect "law enforcement" to actually "enforce the law" feel less than satisfied with it.
Predictably, the Charlotte Disturber advocates the don't ask / don't tell policy (for crime victims, yeah, that's the ticket). Public opinion seems to be split along the usual political lines.
So there ya go... still sucks.
