And why should you assume that, absent a statement to that effect from the White House?

I am increasingly applying the "trust but verify" axiom to the Bush administration.

Poor assumption, or the administration would have told you she was legal.

I find myself wondering if this woman got preference in the legalization process. If she was illegal at the time Bush hired her--or had her hired for him--then he lied to the public when he responded negatively when questioned whether he has ever hired an illegal.
