There were folks who had advised him that maybe this wasn't such a good idea before an election.

Conservatism, like zoysia, needs to be given the chance to propagate.
Both need to be nourished and watered if they are to flourish. If ignoble seeds are continually spread amongst either, their potential then will never be realized.
