ELMIRA, N.Y. -- As "New York, New York" so famously promises, if you can make it there you can make it anywhere. Hillary Rodham Clinton may soon put those lyrics to a presidential test.
With little question that she will win re-election to the Senate this fall, a larger question looms: If Clinton turned numbers of skeptical and sometimes openly hostile upstate New Yorkers significantly in her favor, could she pull off the same thing nationally in a 2008 run for the White House?
Seven years ago, when she began her Senate campaign, many residents of this hard-pressed Finger Lakes region considered Clinton the political equivalent of the Wicked Witch of the West. Older women, particularly, acidly criticized her as domineering, arrogant, ambitious and oblivious to blue-collar concerns--not to mention unable to rein in her philandering husband.
During her first term as the state's junior U.S. senator, Clinton hardly has morphed into Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. But the Democrat has shed much of her image as a broom-riding carpetbagger and gained more than a little respect and appreciation in some of the most conservative corners of the state.

Yeah! The idiots have embraced her like the tar baby!
You are the problem, not Hillary Clinton!
Talk about insanely confused!...
Please give your thoughts on how she can be defeated in 2008.
Keep in mind this creature is able to galvanize the scornful side of women, is able to manipulate the press like no other, and seems to gain support when 'the vast right-wing conspiracy' attack her character.
How to overcome her?
Also keep in mind she controls one of the largest union pension funds in the world, that of the government education union.
No heterosexual man will EVER vote for hitlary.
(Democrat? I didn't know you were a homosexual!)
FWIW, NYS is made up of mostly red counties :)
Hillary may be evil but at least she is not insane like McCain.
I'll vote for 1/2 insane, 1/4 conservative over 100% pure unadulterated EVIL and 100% pure SOCIALIST any day.
Good one Phil!
Maybe. Can a chokehold be considered an embrace?
I attended one of her "listening tour" sessions when she was running for Senate in 2000. I never saw a more orchestrated event. College students told her about their volunteering activities, and she nodded like a bobblehead. About ten minutes into her half hour speech, her audience began to leave. Half the crowd was gone while she was still speaking. I think people came to see a person they'd seen on TV. At the end, she came down near the door, alone, to greet the crowd, yet she made no conversation, nor effort to shake hands. Everyone in front of me merely exited, and she stood there behind her expressionless mask. It was very weird.
The evening's TV coverage grossly exaggerated both the size and temperament of the crowd. The next day's newspaper article bore no resemblance to the event I witnessed.
If she's re-elected, it will be due to the NY GOP party's failure to use the six years it has had to find any kind of credible candidate.
If I were to guess I'd say that underneath it all she is not a happy person.
She is powerful and people cater to her but she must know she is not likable.
I wouldn't lay money that she'd win NY again. Upstaters hate her.
Say again!
I might abstain, but I will never in my life ever pull a lever for a Dim.
When does she mean what she says. LOL
Yet, NY elected her. Go figure.
