Democrats signal oversight of Bush would increase. Probes by Congress may be in the cards

Michigan Democrat Rep. John Conyers Jr.'s Web site features his call for investigations of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and President Bush's authorization of wiretapping without court warrants.

Conyers says either could justify Bush's impeachment or censure.

It is one of numerous demands by frustrated Democrats, out of power in Congress for several years, for investigations of the Bush administration.

But with the growing prospect that they could regain control of at least the House in the November elections, Democratic leaders are signaling that they intend to increase oversight of the White House if they win a majority — and use their subpoena power to put the administration on the griddle.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California has indicated that high energy prices, faulty intelligence used to justify the Iraq war and the National Security Agency's surveillance program would be investigated.

President's can't veto every act of Congress

I must have missed that part of the law can you point it out to me! Also point out the bills the President has vetoed!

No we don't have an immigration bill yet but the R's in the Senate have totally capitulated the issue, giving the D's everything they wanted its the worst bill to possibly come out of the Senate in my lifetime.

Are you an immigration lawyer?

"I must have missed that part of the law can you point it out to me!"

All that's needed is for more than two thirds of the Senate to vote for any bill, and The President's veto power is gone.

Well Gramps, since you don't like my ideas,(even though you have confused them) what are yours? I'm willing to listen.

The Senate Bill stinks to high heaven.
No question about that.
Now what we have to be doing now, is get phoning and writing to those Republicans that are going to the conference from both the House and The Senate, and stiffen their backs so they fight tooth and nail to take out the obnoxious parts of the Senate Bill, The House Bill being far more in tune with what the majority of Americans, irrespective of Party, want.

you seem to need a little help on our laws-

http://clerkkids.house.gov/laws/bill_veto_override.html

You suspect 2/3 of the Republican controlled Congress would override their President? What does that tell you? Still waiting foy you to point out all the bills he has vetoed!

Totally agree with you on the vailidty of those points and that was the point of bringing them up. All lies successfully projected by the Dems. Yet we haven't heard a single republican refute them and they've stuck with the ignorant electorate. Keep in mind the folks on here aren't the average voter.

For instance I spent the holidays in 98' supporting air strikes on Iraqi WMD sites, Sites that never existed now, according to the history successfully revised by the Dems. Most people are unaware that that event ever occurred and look at me like a liar when I tell them about. Just look at the Sunday talking head shows. Dominated by the Dems who are dedicating themselves 24/7 to their misguided cause while the Repubs enjoy personal time.

Lack of effort...Politics is part of the job and they've done poorly. Now, they just react to whichever weekly talking point the Dems come up with. I pray for a Rovian Rope a Dope, but don't see anything on the horizon.

Enjoy your myopia.

"you seem to need a little help on our laws "

I stand corrected.

Two-thirds vote or greater in both the House and the Senate will override the President's veto.

My original point still stands.
The President can't use the veto every time, Congress can and has overridden Presidentially vetoes.

You just can't use veteoes all the time or threaten to use vetoes all the time.
Its like the boy that cried wolf.
It loses its effectiveness.
Powers of persuation rather then the bludgeon are more effective means of governing.

"You suspect 2/3 of the Republican controlled Congress would override their President?"

Nothing is impossible.
If I remember correctly, the President has threatened to use the Veto a few times, even with Republicans controlling Congress.

"Still waiting foy you to point out all the bills he has vetoed! "

Read up.
I have insisted in this thread, that the use if veto and the threat of the use of veto should only been used sparingly, especially since we control both Houses of Congress.

"Well Gramps, since you don't like my ideas,(even though you have confused them) what are yours? I'm willing to listen."

Thanks for the good question. I took a shower and thought about it. Here are my Shower Power thoughts:

I have zero chance of impacting my $inators Finestein and Boxer, and my congressit makes them look conservative.

However, I can donate some money to good Republican House Members in other states and candidates running against the incumbant rats.

What if we compiled a list of good Republican House Members who will do the right things with their website donation pages/links? Then, people like you and I can donate to help support these good people and help keep them in office.

Also, there may be a good Republican Challenger to a rat in congress, who needs financial help.

The only way we can find out about these good and needy candidates is via other freepers.

Coop recently posted a thread re how to support a Republican Lady Candidate against Murtha. I think that a lot of us donated to her campaign.

I will be heading to Church soon to pray for my sins, but maybe you and some other creative Freepers can come up with a permanent thread/posting of Republican House Members up for election or candidates against a Rat who will do the right things on immigration and the WOT.

If someone comes up with a permanent thread like this (permanent until the election is over), I will support and bump the thread and donate to many of the good candidates.

If the list becomes a good one, maybe Rush, Sean, Mark and others could adopt it and push for donations on their programs and websites.

We would never handle any money, we would just post the legitimate links for donations to these good Republican House Members running for re election or candidates to replace rats in Congress.

"That might be the only way to sort things out. That, or secession of the Red states."

Good point the secession of the red states or red areas would leave the liberals with a paltry landmass the size of three or four states. The war would be won without firing a shot.

Amen and AMEN!

The RATs are pathetic in their hatred of this president, and it's insanity to lose sight of what we'd have to deal with if they win majorities.

I beg to differ just a little bit-- the media sense what they perceive as weakness. In short, they misunderestimate this president and do so at their own peril. TO wit: I've noticed falling circulation for lib newspapers, falling ratings for network news, and don't forget that although I don't believe the President's ratings are as low as the MSM would have us believe they are, ratings for Congress as a whole is even lower and MSM lower still.

I agree with you, I don't think the President's approval is as low as their polls indicate. However, I don't take comfort that circulation is decreasing for major newspapers. People get their news online. The Yahoo page tries to carry the most anti-Bush, anti-Iraq stories that they can.

You can vote the way you usually do..for the RATS.

As that statement is totally false I won't go on. Now using your logic, if I don't fully support a President McCain I will be a DU'er, a leftist, a Rat....please your logic is lacking.

Well Gramps those all sound like excellent ideas to me! We need to organize our assets and use them effectively. Cut out giving support to those contrary to our most important ideals and goals. Find help from others that agree with us on major issues and get them to join us while still having some smaller differences of opinions. Concentrate on getting rid of non-representative or corrupt politicians.

I'm all for it and it needs to start right now before irreversible damage is done. Congress and the President need to know a Nation divided cannot stand and they are dividing not just political parties but the Nation.

Someone with better html and organizing skills than myself could help get the ball rolling-any volunteers? do we atart with a state by state database of who is up for reelection or election and their past voting records, promises or broken promises, their voting scores on different subjects, abortion, immigration, taxes etc? anyone have suggestions on how to do this? HELP!
