An interesting exercise...I would bet that if you took the dead center median of lawyers that salary would come out about the same. But the thing is, my point of view may be inaccurate because I live in NYC, so lawyers would tend to earn more than in other geographic areas.

Exactly so. NYC is famous for its highly inflated salaries and living expenses. I live in rural Arizona, exactly the opposite in demographics. I suspect it would take three times my salary to live as well... No, it would be impossible for me to live as well in NYC. I don't like living in crowded urban areas, but some people do. More power to 'em, leaves more room for me.
