Common language is not the same as official language.
I want the latter and I want all ballots and government documents printed in nothing but.

The Senate has already made me mad enough that this posturing is not going to placate me.

OK.
But please don't make a law that says I can't name a business "Taco Tio", or "Copa Cabana"; or that I can't say "Hola!" if I spot a bunch of friends (Hispanic or otherwise)--or even a law
that is simply going to be a gold mine for attorneys
who want to file a zillion cases to determine exactly what
this law means.

Your absolutely correct. The Senate is also doing everything possible to insure that 20 years from now English will be the Uncommon Language in the Un-United States of American Mexico.

I don't care about business names, I don't even care what people speak to each other on their own time or outside of the workplace. I do, however, care about what language is printed on government documents and spoken at government offices.
I also think employers should have a right to demand that employees speak english while on the job and/or their employers grounds. That would include during breaks.

I find it quite interesting that a couple of days ago congress voted to maintain the multi language ballots for another 25 years, then voted on the bill to make English the official language. Seems to me they put the cart before the horse.

The vote was sixty-three to treinta-cuatro.

Now if only they can force businesses to only offer telephone instructions in English...
Lately, I have noticed that to select Spanish, you must dial '1'. It's as if English has already been demoted to #2 or #3 in some markets.

Watch . . . we're going to go the way of the old Hapsburg Empire. Before my time comes I expect to see the folks in the McMansions sporting high heels and powdered wigs.

The Republican party are playing us for fools. They are counting on the base reelecting those who vote against amnesty while those not up for reelection sell us out.

Typical of those cowardly weasels. 'Common language'. Every time you think they can't possibly sink any lower, they do. This parsing of language, sleazing out of standards...is Clinton's legacy.
One bit of news you might have missed: The other day in Iceland, Clinton failed to sell out the hall in one of his appearances. It seems the world's getting sick of him.
