Call for video of Mex soccer fans chanting "Osama" when playing the US

February 15, 1998 in Los Angeles, USA - "During a game between the US and Mexico February 15, the US soccer team was not only booed and jeered throughout the entire game by Mexican fans, but were continually pelted with water, beer and in some cases solid objects like fruit from the over 60,000 fans in attendance.

One player was hit during with a water balloon during a corner kick attempt. As the team left the field at the end of both halves, beer and other debris rained down on them as they tried to run through the tunnel to their locker room. Mexico's fans in the end got the best of Uncle Sam as the Mexican national team defeated the US, 1-0.

This type of behavior is nothing new in Mexico, England, most of Europe, or any other Latin American countries. Home nations make it a matter of habit to act like idiots to visiting teams, and this incident was no different; except that it happened in Los Angeles, California!

Now, the rivalry between these two national teams has become pretty heated as the US has become a somewhat meager soccer power of sorts, but what happened in this case is completely inexcusable because it happened on America's own soil."

February 5, 2004 in Zapopan, Mexico "Last Thursday, when the U.S. played Canada in a qualifying round in Zapopan before 1,500 Mexicans, the crowd hooted "The Star-Spangled Banner," it booed U.S. goals. And it chanted "Osama! Osama! Osama" as the American players left the field with a 2-0 victory."

February 10, 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico "In the 26th minute, the throng began chanting 'Osama! Osama!' at the Americans, but they appeared inured to such taunting and eager for a game of beautiful desperation in an attempt to reach the Olympics."

March 27, 2005 in Mexico City, Mexico "There was some booing and whistling during 'The Star-Spangled Banner' but the Americans expected worse. After the game, about 100 people gathered for a peaceful celebration near Mexico City's Angel of Independence monument. A few first tried to burn, then trampled a small American flag while chanting 'Osama! Osama!'"

I don't see how cheering the name of a terrorist mass murderer like Osama Bin Laden can be anything other than racism on the part of Mexicans. I don't see any irony at all.

Because they're football fans, and football fans tastelessly taunt one another. You should come to an Israeli football match some time.

WORLD CUP '94; Mexico Victory Stirs Violence (NYTimes)

Published: June 26, 1994

Fans celebrating Mexico's soccer victory threw rocks and bottles at police late Friday in the first violence in the United States linked to the World Cup.

"The situation was very severe," Sgt. Tom Wesiles of the Huntington Park Police said today, adding that several stores in the suburb five miles south of downtown Los Angeles had windows smashed by looters. "It was out of control."

Wesiles said about 5,000 people in the mainly Hispanic area of the city began celebrating Mexico's 2-1 victory in Orlando, Fla., over Ireland at 11:30 A.M., and that officers in riot gear moved in when things got out of control 12 hours later. The police said that only one person was arrested

Bingo!

Something I'm concerned about: with public education being what it is today, how are these millions of new immigrants supposed to develop patriotism and loyalty to the United States? Especially people from Mexico, who were taught in their schools that the US stole the land of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas from Mexico?

Is that some sort of debating tactic, saying "a yes or no will do"?

No, I do not like anyone who hates America. I also don't think that the behavior of a bunch of football fan troublemakers should be used to apply collective judgement to all Mexicans. With the immigration debate going on, a lot of people have been trying to stir up emotional reactions to Mexico instead of dispassionately focusing on the important issue, which is enforcement of the law. To the degree that people on FR are using that tactic, it damages the credibility of the rest of us and the argument we're trying to make.

I guess someone could say there's a huge backlog of Palestinians wanting to move into Israel and plan to do that once Israel becomes Palestine.

But... that would be harsh and unfair, wouldn't it.

Low blow?  Yes, it was.  Sorry.

That would be an interesting comparison.

Mexico without the USA versus the USA without Mexico.

Gee. Which one do you think would survive?

Funny, nobody on FR attacks Polish immigrants.

From today's USA Today:

WARSAW (AP) — Soccer fans celebrating a league championship broke store windows, damaged restaurant terraces and fought with police, outbursts leading to more than 200 arrests in the capital and injuries to more than 50 officers.

About 1,500 officers in riot gear clashed with hooligans Saturday night after some of the estimated 7,000 fans celebrating Legia Warsaw's victory in front of the Royal Castle tried to break into a liquor store and attacked police with paving stones.

Police arrested 231 people for assault and property destruction, Warsaw police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski said Sunday. Fifty-four police officers were injured, and one remained hospitalized with a concussion.

Praising terrorists is not mere "tastelessness", but something far worse and more sinister.

Mexico is a succesful, multi-party democracy with one of the strongest, most diverse econonomies in the world,

In what Doppelganger universe do you reside?

Your statement is one of the most bizarre I've ever encountered here.

Strong, diverse economies do not drive their people across international borders (illegally) to find a better life.

Mexico without the USA versus the USA without Mexico. Gee. Which one do you think would survive?

Both would survive, but both would lose out as their economies would shrink substantially.

Not a low blow, just stupid. Your point will be less stupid when Mexican terrorists start firing rockets into the US and blowing up US pizza restaurants.

The 3rd largest sector in the Mexican economy is in money sent from workers in the US back home.

Hmmm. Israel without the USA versus the USA without Israel. Gee. Which one do you think would survive?

Chew on that for a while.

I had forgotten about that riot....was curious they were looting 3000 miles away from the game. Oh well, a .45 to the culo will cure that.

Nope, it's not BS. It REALLY did happen! They REALLY did chant Osama in a game with OUR team! It may come as a shock to your system to find out that there are some Mexicans who HATE Americans. They hate us because they think we stole their country, and they want us to go back to Europe. Intelligent aren't they? LOL!

Oh get over yourself. It is mere tastelessness, unless you actually believe that Mexicans support Al Qaeda. Which they clearly don't.
