No problem. And honestly I have spent time tracking this down. I have the original magazine article as well. When I read it my BP went up quite a few notches. She shouldn't have been done that way. It was IKE & not JFK and McNamara made that call. By the time LBJ was in office she was close to float.

Her keel was laid before JFK took office that means critical components such as boilers and hull thickness etc were already layed out. To undo it either way would have added more time than it was worth to the build time at that point.

Related news. As near as I can find out the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany will be sank in the Gulf of Mexico tomorrow morning. For any ORISKANY squids in here AMERICA crew members knows how you feel. ORISKANY had a good service history and took a lot of hard licks in her time too.
