Bush immigration speech: Key quotes
bbc ^ | 5/16/06 | bbc

The following are key excerpts from President George W Bush's televised speech on immigration:

"We must begin by recognizing the problems with our immigration system. For decades, the United States has not been in complete control of its borders. As a result, many who want to work in our economy have been able to sneak across our border, and millions have stayed... Yet we must remember that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are decent people who work hard, support their families, practice their faith, and lead responsible lives. They are a part of American life, but they are beyond the reach and protection of American law."

Five years after 9/11 we are going to do something to secure one of our borders against terrorists. We are going to about double our pathetically small border patrol, adding some technological whizbangs (after the usual lengthy development period).

We'll try to intercept 85% of aliens close to the border, after which they will be home (our home) free and ready to claim with assorted witnesses that they've really been here for ten years and deserve to be in the "temporary worker program", the new name for amnesty, which we will allow them to purchase for maybe $1000.

Sheesh! Thank God Tancredo isn't buying this. (Gracias Dios que Tancredo no comprarlo.)

Agreed. It's amazing how all these attacks on our homeland since 9-11 just happened to not come off, by pure chance and coincidence. Thank God for good luck these past five years, since obviously so many plots have just coincidentally not come to fruition.

Thank GOD in 5 years none of those terrorists who've snuck in through the southern border have been able to cobble together the cash for a single terrorist attack. Budget problems, you know (not due to Bush drying up their funding, of course, it's just another coincidence).

Shows what you know. You may not be terrified, but there is a small and very vocal cabal of disgruntled Buchanan supporters on this site that are nearly scared to death. They've become convinced America has been destroyed. They've surrendered to this insidious threat and decided they won't even leave their houses to vote this year. Not only have the terrorists struck, but they've actually defeated a core group of third party voters. In fact, you might even notice that some of them have started posting in Spanish. (Funny thing is, the only people who same able to read their Spanish are other members of their new surrender party.) So don't kid yourself. Those sneaky terrorists are succeeding alright. They're picking off the sick and the weak all around you.

I see. It's the James Bond tactics that have kept us safe while ignoring the most obvious security measure...

There is no need for a WOT if there is no need to control the borders, so what are we spending all the money on?

Obviously they are working very well. Or perhaps you'd like to list all the terror attacks we've suffered in the last 4 years. For that matter, perhaps you can list any terrorist attacks we've suffered from people sneaking over our Southern border.

"I notice you avoid my second part of my post."

I was trying to cut you a little slack. You obviously don't follow current events. Let me fill you in. There is a little war going on against Islamofascists. We are killing them all over Southwest Asia. It is going pretty well right now. So well, in fact, that none of them have been able to attack this country since 9/11. They've hit countries all over the world, but not the United States. It is a war we are winning, even without the help of single issue, anti-Bush whiners.

How many terrorist attacks did we have prior to 911?

Tell that to the guys driving helicopters for a living these days.

Could it be something changed?

You might as well be selling the idea we don't need roofs on our houses, because it hasn't rained.

"How many terrorist attacks did we have prior to 911?"

In 1993 Islamic militants were nearly successful in blowing up the World Trade Center. In 1995, Timothy McVeigh was successful in blowing up the Murrah building in Oklahoma.

What part of "War" on Terror do you not understand? Have you participated?

Don't forget TWA800, the Cole, and the African embassies.

"Don't forget TWA800, the Cole, and the African embassies."

TWA800 was not a terror incident, and the other two did not take place in America.

What part of "War" on Terror do you not understand?

The part that REQUIRES an offense, but DOES NOT require a defense. Your rationale is incapable of distinguishing between an effective defense, and a situation that requires no defense. You might as well be claiming vicks vapo-rub prevented you from getting cancer.
