Gibson inspired by 'fear-mongering'

Film star and director Mel Gibson has launched a scathing attack on US President George W Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilisation in his new film Apocalypto.

The epic, due for release later this year, captures the decline of the Maya kingdom and the slaughter of thousands of inhabitants as human sacrifices in a bid to save the nation from collapsing.

Gibson reveals he used present day American politics as an inspiration, claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power.

He tells British film magazine Hotdog, "The fear-mongering we depict in the film reminds me of President Bush and his guys".

Wine is fermented grapes. Wining is what one does, when they drink wine.

Whine is what children and some adults do, when they are petulant and don't get their own way. Whining is what some do, when they want what they aren't getting.

And your point is? "Rose" was wondering about the correct spelling of "wining", as in "wining and dining" (or, as you said, "the drinking of wine").

I was just giving the spelling to two words, which sound alike.

The only way some people will understand the threat to this nation is if the Administration stands aside and lets something happen. This " fear mongering" talk is a consequence of successfully defending this nation. But really now! Have the events of 9-11 become so much in the distant past?

Look past 9-11 and you'll see that Islamic terrorists have been attacking Americans and American interests for 40 years. If someone handed Mel Gibson a book on the history of this would Gibson accuse the person of "fear mongering"? I am surprised this comes from Mel Gibson.

Alas, the administration is caught betwixt and between. Because should another attack happen, instead of recognizing the enemy for who and what they are, the left wil insist the attack happened because of Bush's misleadership.

"....claiming the government callously plays on the nation's insecurities to maintain power....."

Perhaps Mel is referring to the tendency of republican party to simply demonize the democrats rather than actually addressing their own shortcomings?

It's been posted thousands of times right here on FR - "Just imagine what would happen if pelosi were speaker of the house...." etc.

It is important not to forget that Mel is an actor and a movie maker, just a man, not a demigod.

I am not suggesting that the Administration allows something to happen to prove the reality of the threat! I think the ignorance of the threat and claims of "fear mongering" by some are an acceptable consequence of successfully defending this nation against the threat.

Very shameful though anytime, especially during a time of war. Undermines the war effort and attributes to many more deaths, both military and civilian.

"And as to that much over/misused Franklin quote, old Ben would never have made it through WW II and neither would America, had America followed that hackneyed position."

Benjamin Franklin was a co-author of the Constituition of United States, and without him the U.S. would never have made it to WW II and neither would you. Then you wouldn't be able to enjoy gritching about Ben Franklin and his quotes you disagree with.

Mel cleverly waited until he had soaked Christian Conservatives to the tune of billions before he let his paleo-con freak fly free.

Sel! Not Spell

A newly hired traveling salesman named Gooch wrote his first report to the home office. It stunned the brass in the Sales Department because it was obvious that the new man was illiterate. Here is what he wrote:

Deer Bos,
I hav seen this owtfit wich aynt nevr bawt a dimz wurth uv nuthin frum us an I sol them a cuppl hunred thowsan dolars of gudz. I am now goin to chicawgo.
Gooch

Before the sales manager could give the illiterate the heave-ho, this letter came from Chicago:

Deer Bos,
I went to chicawgo an sole them haf a millyon.
Gooch

The Sales Manager was fearful if he did, and fearful if he didn’t fire the illiterate. He dumped the problem in the lap of the president.

The following morning the staff in the ivory tower was amazed to see the two letters posted on the bulletin board, and this memo from the president:

To All Salespeople,
We bin spendin to much tym tryin to spel insted uv tryin to sel. Letz watch thoz saylz. I want evreewun shood reed theez letturz frum Gooch hoo is duin a grate job fur us, and u shud go owt and do lyke he dun.

Ben Franklin did not know into how small a package one could compress the fires of hell. The death toll on 09/11/01 was about 8% of the population of Philadelphia. What are we going to lose with a 1 kiloton nuke? A little security?
