It's been fun, but I have to run now. I need to respond to an IRS assessment that would make a normal person's blood run cold. (I guess I'm lucky, but when you're in a higher tax bracket, both the Feds & State of Calif spend a lot of their resources hounding you.)

Fortunately, I had to deal with the same exact issue from a prior year that was resolved completely in my favor - even got sort of an apology from the IRS. Point is, US citizens live in fear of our various agencies when they are turned against us.

In the meantime, I will continue to pay my fair share to help support illegal aliens enjoy the fruits of our forefather's sacrifices.

Sounds like the tune up for the Republican Party's swan song....too late, pal. Thanks for blowing it and giving my children a legancy of future pukey liberalism/socialism.

You, I and every other person on FR and in the country knows the answer to the second question. Bush is not only doing nothing about illegal immigration, but he is actively aiding & abetting.

How can you expect anyone to take you seriously making such a stupid comment like that one? Guess which President has spent more money on border enforcement then all other Presidents COMBINED? If I were you, I would just STFU until after the President's speech next week.

IF the President gets up and speaks of 'guest worker' without having laid the groundwork with a lot of words about troops on the border and a wall, then he is committing political suicide. His number will drop to the teens...

If he pushes border security and actually acts to put boots on the ground on the border, then his number go up perhaps 10pts.

Seems to me the President controls his own destiny here.

*** EARLY WARNING***

Watch this Sleight of hand move by Bush....

Promise to utilize National Guard on a standby backup logistical support mode in a role to be determined at a later date.

While at the same time imploring us to pass the path to citizenship..next week!!..because lets all say it..."There are jobs that Americans wont do".....

If he wanted a credible solution he would implement the guard and table the discussion for 2 years.

Would you care to clarify for all to read who sent who the first FRmail? I only replied to yours. I would have never, ever initiated private conversation with someone so vile.

You shared his Freepmail with "many others?"

Classy.

Is the guest worker program for new workers currently outside the country or does it include the 12 to 20 million illegals here now?

Almost immaterial. Optimally done south of the border, but the primary concern is ID and tracking, so it doesn't actually matter where.

What happens when the guest worker stops working for the sponsoring employer?

Part of the registration process -- a worker leaves, you're expected to take him off your books. Given the likely tax load associated with the worker, employers will have an incentive to do that. He's tracked, IOW, and since he can't get another job without being registered, there's no incentive to stay here undocumented. (IMO, the passes would have at most a 2-year validity, but 1 year would probably be better.)

Can workers bring their families?

No, unless they have jobs, too.

Who issues the documentation?

Who issues green cards now?

The problem with your solution has to do with enforcement. We don't enforce the laws on the books now. What makes you think that will change?

A non-argument. What makes you think ANYTHING will work without enforcement, including your big, silly wall? You're simply assuming a shift from non-enforcement to enforcement -- while at the same time stating that there will be no enforcement. The problem with current laws is that they're not really enforceable, as has been documented in detail on this very thread. The guest worker addresses the ID and tracking aspects that are missing from current rules.

You still didn't answer my other question about the border. How do you dry up the market for the entry of terrorists and criminals? How do we secure our borders?

Once the market for illegal laborers dries up, the border enforcement problem is much easier to manage.

I used to work for US Customs & Border Patrol HQ in the Ronald Reagan Bldg in downtown Washington DC. It was generally known that we could stop the flow of illegals over the border in a heartbeat. It was also generally known that that we were prevented from doing so on orders from the White House.

It is a complete freak that the ruling republicans don't understand that their current path leads to the extinction of republican majorities.

If they kicked out the illegals there might be a chance that the republicans could retain repubublican party leadership of the country. They have no chance if they continue the current course. Right now its a matter of been there done that. Give the illegals citizenship and they vote democratic. That's what they did after the 1986 amnesty. Keep the current course and the republican party splinters. Mexico was the essential issue that last gave the white house to the dems in 1992 and 1996. This time the losses will be more serious and permanent.

The party elders need to be slapped up both sides of the head and kicked in the but.

"The bottom line is that we still don't have control over our borders during a time of war. Comprende?"

IMO, in addition to the steps taken immediately following 9/11, including shutting down all air travel, the national guard should have been posted along the border, until such time as a wall could be built. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for not having done this.

If the immigration laws were enforced, and illegals were denied food stamps, housing, cash, and medicaid, a wall would be paid for.

If the immigration laws were enforced, and illegals were arrested, we could reward them by allowing them to 'EARN' DEPORTATION by building the wall. The amount of time laboring would be in direct proportion to the amount of time they've been here and the severity of any crimes, including, identity theft and fraudulently receiving benefits. 5 or more years, could equal 5 months of labor on the wall, 2 - 5 years, 2 - 5 months of labor on the wall, etc.

I suspect his 'announcement' on monday will be a combination of sending a nominal number of national guard to the border until it can be secured with a 'virtual' border of some sort and 'earned' amnesty for illegals.
How can he be so out of touch?

No doubt you would admit that Reagan's failure to build a fence in 1986 and capitulation on amnesty indicates that Reagan was not a REAL conservative and was in bed with the Mexican Presidente.
