The fallout from the slaying of a 22-year-old murder witness who had been under San Francisco prosecutors' protection highlights what insiders noticed some time back -- that up-and-coming Mayor Gavin Newsom and up-and-coming District Attorney Kamala Harris are barely on speaking terms.
Sure, the two meet regularly in the mayor's office to discuss policy -- but as one participant said, "The temperature is so cold between them, you could freeze a six-pack in two minutes."
Some track the chill back to the behind-the-scenes rivalry between Harris and Newsom's ex-wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, when the two worked as prosecutors for former District Attorney Terence Hallinan.
Others say the animosity stems from a fear in the Newsom camp that Harris might decide to take a run at the mayor's job in 2007 if Newsom stumbles.
Still others say the rift is the by-product of the finger-pointing between the cops and the district attorney over the city's failure to put more killers behind bars and stem an epidemic of street homicides.
Whatever the case, Newsom's camp sees Harris as insufferable and self-centered -- and the Harris folks see Newsom as endlessly self-promoting and imperial.
And that was before Terrell Rollins -- the murder witness in the D.A. protection program -- was shot to death outside an auto repair shop in the Bayview. Rollins was supposed to be under armed escort whenever he came into the city, but on Thursday he decided to drive in on his own.
It was a fatal mistake on Rollins' part -- but it was also an embarrassing reminder that despite Newsom's very public efforts, the city's homicide rate is still running at a 10-year high.
The day after the shooting, reporters were all over the mayor. He argued that "this is not the first time this has happened,"

I love it when they attack their own!!
BION: Some people in 'The City' are actually talking about Newsome as future Presidential material!
ROFLMAO.
These people have not a clue one.
For once, they are both 100% correct. ;)
Is that the same Kimberly Guilfoyle that is on Fox News on Saturday night?
"...the city's homicide rate is still running at a 10-year high."
And remember, this is in the face of a gun ban that was promoted as a fix for the murder rate "problem". But hey, like you point out, a City government that has no problem ignoring laws that it doesn't like should not be surprised when citizens do the same.
"and stem an epidemic of street homicides"
Throwing out their un-constitutional gun-ban might be a start.
They're really doing the citizens of thir city justice with all their childish in-fighting.
Selfish, nasty people.
thir=their
On another note, all this in-fighting shows them for what they REALLY are; POWERHUNGRY.
Political power and status is all they care about, they could care less about their "subjects".
If San Fransisco, California, would adopt the same gun control laws as Mahalasville, Indiana, it might enjoy the same murder rate.
It is also the same gal,who while still married to the bozo, was addressing a largely gay crowd and told them that she held onto her husband because she performed oral sex better than they did. A real classy broad. Since the divorce it appears that she was wrong.
Sounds to me like the mayor and DA are off the hook on this one. Rollins decided to tempt fate and Murphy stepped right in, as he always does.
I saw her the other night, and I thought that she seemed like she did not get her job for her looks. I thought she seemed a little breathless but competent and seemed to know what she was talking about and asked good questions, especially for FNC.
Newsome is pretty young, I think they are talking much further down the road then '08.
Oh my! I was going to comment on the fact that her large muscular bony jaw and unusual mouth twisting took away from her looks. Ruh Roh, never mind.....Yikes....
Once again, DemoRetard "Humane policies", have created
a 'Free Murder Zone'..
