My first thought, too. Awfully bold regardless.
This type of attack is pretty common south of the border as well. I read about 5 cops being shot at a resturaunt in Neuvo Laredo yesterday.

That's right. I initially said it sounds like Iraq, but it also sounds like our good friends the Mexicans (and everybody in South America).
But it does not sound like Virginia.

All of us are wondering about the motive. Maybe a terrorist attack like jocon suggests. Perhaps a revenge attack for someone in a gang who was shot or arrested. Or perhaps this was a "diversionary" attack to keep the police busy while something was taking place elsewhere.

Saw a special over the weekend on CNN which was pretty well done. Neuvo Laredo is a war zone. You have massive shootouts practically every night and the police move around in platoons like a military operation. The night they featured, a group of paid assassins opened fire on the police and the police wiped all of them out by machine gun fire. Vehicles strewn about the streets with bullet holes all over them.
The sheriff and deputies on our side (can't remember the name of the town)walks around with a neck slung CAR 15 in 9mm. That's his duty weapon. He said every night the gunfire coming from over the border is incredible. He goes down every night to the Rio Grand to apprehend smugglers (people, drugs) who are heavily armed.
He is pleading for reenforcement from the federal government as the whole area is spiraling out of control. I really felt for the guy.
