TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey: We're Not So Good With Slogans.
The state has jettisoned "Come See For Yourself," its second attempt at a tagline in less than a year. It was the product of a statewide contest set up by then-acting Gov. Richard J. Codey last fall, after he rejected a consultant's offering: "We'll Win You Over."
State tourism officials said legal issues led them to scrap the latest slogan, explaining that West Virginia and other states previously used "Come See For Yourself."
"We are proceeding without the slogan. We will revisit the next steps at the end of the year," Karen Wolfe, a spokeswoman for the state Commerce, Economic Growth and Tourism Commission, told The Press of Atlantic City for Saturday editions.
Codey, now state Senate president, dismissed "We'll Win You Over" because he said it reminded him too much of when he was single and asked girls out on a date.
"Come See For Yourself" was the top choice among more than 11,000 telephone and online votes cast by residents for five finalist entries in the contest. Codey unveiled the slogan with great fanfare in January, saying the Garden State's catch phrase "should hint at our true beauty."
But at an annual tourism conference in Cape May County last month, the slogan was absent from all state promotional materials. The slogan is also missing from this year's tourism television commercials, featuring a song by rocker Jon Bon Jovi.
Tourism officials said they won't pick from any of the four other finalists: "Love at First Sight," "The Real Deal," "The Best Kept Secret" or "Expect the Unexpected."
Shhhhh -- we don't need any more "immigrants"....
The new New Jersey slogan:
"Jersey!!! You got a problem with that???!!!
Ducking for cover.
yeah, I've been there... Barnegatt Light, the Shore, Cinnaminson , Piney Woods and inumerable other "exits" off the tollway.. Met some nice women and girls, but it's strange to talk to a beautiful girl and she sounds like Fat Tony Soprano.
As far as living there... what a f'ing joke. It's the most corrupt or almost as corrupt as Pennsylvania. It's a bunch of old farts that need "connections" to make anything "happen" as far as business. Bunch of parasites.. that goes for most of the Northeast. Taxes are just the "little" peoples way of screwing the "connected" guys.
It's just a culture of screw your buddy, what can I get away with and general sleeziness. There is no effort of even pretending that they "stand" for something. Jersey is a second rate New York and Massachusettes with an inferiority complex so big that they have to try to out "liberal" the other sh#t holes in the Northeast to appear "progressive" and "innovative".
Taxes out the nose, hostile business environment, selective enforcement of laws,... I'm just surprised that they haven't elected a kennedy to put the cherry on the whole manure sundae.
NJ does "kick ass"... it kicks it's citizen's asses and they deserve it for letting the powers that be get away with it.
How about we scrap our new governor, the formerly acting governor an 95% of our elected officials of both parties.
NJ: "high taxes for our future!"
"Halfway to Nowhere"
"Armpit of the MidAtlantic"
"Come for a Gay Old Time"
"Liberal Wonderland"
Oh come on man. I live in NJ. This is one of the most corrupt states in the nation, and is a total cesspool. Democratic control of this state has destroyed the economy- we may have a ton of businesses yes; that is, a ton of businesses LEAVING this state because of its absurd tax burden and ridiculous liberal policies.
Jon Corzine is running this state into the ground. And being that the idiots of this state elected him, New Jersey deserves every bit of criticism it gets.
As an Arizonan who had never been east of Ohio, I used to always rag on "Joisey." But a few years ago, I was there for a week and fell in love with the place. We were mostly in the Princeton area, but visited several gorgeous sites across the state.
Sure, when we drove around Newark and parts of Trenton, it wasn't too good, but everyplace else was pretty amazing. I agree that NJ gets an undeserved bad rap.
"It's strange to talk to a beautiful girl and she sounds like Fat Tony Soprano"
That's IT!!!! That's the new New Jersey slogan.
You are the winner.
Gateway to hell
My favorite of the earlier suggestions was: "New Jersey: Not As Bad As You Think."
"Met some nice women and girls, but it's strange to talk to a beautiful girl and she sounds like Fat Tony Soprano."
If she talks with that dialect, she's probably from Philadelphia.
(And screw all you losers makin fun of Jersey. Funny how the same ppl making lame toxic waste jokes are probably big supporters of the kind of policies that lead to toxic waste dumps. Most of you have probably never been here. We've got great restaurants, beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers, sports, arts, woods, farms, fishing, hunting. And yes, a ton of businesses which means a ton of jobs. That's why us NJers make so much money. So screw YOU!)
Well, that's a little long for a slogan but it's as just good as the others.
New Jersey - It Sucks!
"You may survive"
Some very, very good ones here no question. But I kinda like, "Visit New Jersey, or we will break your kneecaps." Succinct, yet touching.
New Jersey - "Come See For Yourself where America's enema tube is inserted"
