How about people who insist on splitting down the middle even though they got something WAY more expensive, and then not figure in a tip either. This happened to me once....once.

Ha.. there was a guy like that with us in college... man, it happened that he ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, and then loudly demanded that we split down the middle when the check came... when we pointed out the fact that his food was more expensive, he had the gall to call US cheap. Noone went out anywhere with him more than once!

Yeah that's happened to me too. I don't go out to eat with people much anymore, and if I do one of us takes the whole tab anyway.

This happened to me once....once. Exactly. Don't let it happen again. My policy is if my meal was more expensive, I tell the other person your share is $X (i.e. whatever their meal costs plus a reasonable amount for a tip. If I had the cheaper meal, I offer to split it down the middle. If the other person accepts that, I don't eat with them again. Don't even get me started on those folks who insist that the waitress figure out exactly who had what and how much it costs.

My all time favorite was when I and a bunch of other guys got tapped for an out of town TDY assignment, back in '84. Our department was sort of collegial and some guys (the "activities coordinator" types) arranged for an informal going away luncheon at a local restaurant.

You can see where this is going. I had a cup of tea and a tuna salad on rye. The "social directors" had a couple of Heinekens, scrod, steak, you get the picture. Then they threw five bucks on the table and "hadda leave", leaving the secretary with the tab. When everyone had gone ( I stuck around to make sure that the secretary wasn't stiffed) she was short of the tab, let alone the tip. So I ended up making it good, spending about twenty bucks (in '84) on a three dollar lunch. I chalked it up to experience.
