I agree however in Britain I would say the reverse is true though some of the newer retired are better off than previous generations were.

Also those that are retiring now with company/private pensions as well as the State Pension are being taxed on that so in a way they are paying for their retirement benefits.

It is a complex problem and no answer or position is right. Means testing is often demeaning and I know many seniors who will not apply for things that they are entitled to for this reason. If they had to apply for prescription benefit I fear many would not as they would feel they are asking for free hand outs, another reason why I am in favour of this benefit. Other benefits yes should be means tested or applied for.

Someone did a side by side comparison of Hayden/Rove, and it was amazing how they look so much alike.

You mean this one?

Dominance = majority = 55 percent.

Meaningless drivel.  It takes 60 to pass anything in the Senate.

And have you ever heard the term "RINO?"

To reverse a Will Rogers line, "I don't belong to an organized political party.  I'm a Republican."

The point is that sitting it out or, worse, voting for a dim because the Republicans aren't perfect is the kind of stupid attitude that got us 8 years of Bill Clinton.  You are serving the wrong interests when you let this type of thinking dominate how you view the choices before us (there, that's an appropriate use of the concept).  There are people to work for who can make a difference within the Republican party.  No libertarian has a chance of getting elected so working for them is counterproductive.  There are no Democrats so good on any issue that their election will make giving one or both houses to the Democrat party as a whole into a worthwhile thing.  So get over your greviences with clowns like Specter and find people you can work for.  I don't care if they're not in your district or state.  Support them.  And if you have to hold your nose and vote for the Specter's of the world if they are your available candidates so that the better party has a chance of getting something, if not everything, accomplished then do it.

The power (and willingness) to destroy something is the absolute power to control that thing.  Right now the dims are willing to destroy our country if they can't control it.  Don't cooperate with them.

The problem is that until the corrupt Dem machine in Philly is corrected Spector will win over Conservatives in the State. I do believe that the Dems will get away with what they used to because of the Democrat harping about pubbies stealing elections, they have put additional scrutiny on themselves. They have a few black marks recently like Christine Gregoire stealing of the Washington State Governor's election. My hope is that the old fool hangs on until the New Governor Swann can appoint someone in his place should he fall really seriously ill, or worse pass on.

In some states, voters have to 'register' by party in order to vote in that party's primary. TX has open primaries - you never have to state what your party is. There is a lot of cross-over voting in primaries. Part of the reason may be that so much at the local level is really just one party. If you can't vote in the primary, you basically don't get a say in who is running.

I so hope you're right --esp. about the railroad to nowhere. Trent Lott has really made me angry with this bit of arrogance.

Great media tidbits, anita.

Everyone ... prime yourselves for GLENN BECK

debuting tomorrow night on CNN Headline News at 7 pm est.

In a first for Headline News, the show will air seven days at a week at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., with encore presentations of weekday shows on Saturdays and Sundays.

I listened to his radio show every day when I was in FL. I don't know what format his show will pursue, but he's so entertaining on the radio: hysterical, patriotic, ridiculous, down to earth, conservative, meteoric, satirical, brutally honest about himself, laugh out loud funny .. he's unique, to say the least.

His political and pop culture satires are priceless. By the same token, his tributes to the troops, to America, to heroes make you weep, they're so moving. He's an original, and I wish him tons of viewers and success.

He may have to tone down his schtick for TV, but you can check to see if his radio show's in your area.

"Am I to understand that the Rally point will be Florida this time?"

This is a democratic (little 'd') forum - so I'm happy for us to put it for a vote - - just thought I'd *volunteer* Rod's place - - so we could have some fun in the sun at the same time ;-) Besides, then MN Johnnie could go deep sea fishing and see how he likes it compared to his usual ice fishing

Could it be Rove with a military uniform on? What a conspiracy that would be for the left leaning types in this country.

I missed that comment by Pelosi about a woman cleaning up the house. She has no room to talk about corruption, her Father was crooked and her brother had huge problems also, and I do not understand why the People in Baltimore Maryland area do not bring out this aspect of her two faced attitude. She is not originally from San Francisco, and even Baltimore is too good for her.

Good grief, our Nancy has a mustache, doesn't she? I've been so captivated by the Botox that I never noticed it before.
