"God Bless all of our National Guardsmen."

I'm curious what you think of the Oklahoma NG going door to door in New Orleans confiscating citizen's firearms.

They're following orders....the problem there are spineless politicos that would order such an unconstitutional thing. Besides, it's Nagin's PD doing that not the National Guard.

Being an Okie, I'd like to answer that if I might. Since the OK NG was posted to New Orleans, they were operating under the auspices of the New Orleans city government. When the city government told them to confiscate weapons, they confiscated weapons---although it is not included in their usual job description.

I was an OKARNG member deployed to New Orleans for that event.

While I cannot speak for the entire set of OKARNG units / soldiers that were deployed, let me say this:

My unit DID NOT go "door to door confiscating citizen's firearms"!

What we DID do was to secure any weapons that we encountered during our patrols and searches for survivors or... casualties... that were found unsecured. (There were only a handful). These unsecured weapons were cataloged, including make, model, serial and location / address / circumstances discovered, and sent to higher.

I would not have "confiscated" any weapon in the possession of a law-abiding citizen, and had no orders to do so.

In one instance, a cellular site repair team needed to pass through my checkpoint. They were all civilians, in a three or four vehicle convoy, and all armed. After verifying their identification and business in accordance with my orders, I commented on the fact that they were armed, pointed out that I thought this was a damn good idea, wished them well and sent them on their way.

As I said, I cannot speak for other units, though I did NOT ever hear of any OKARNG soldiers "confiscating" weapons from law-abiding citizens. (There were stories about some LEOs, especially out-of-state ones, doing so. Other stories about some LEOs behaving badly in other ways too, as well as my own personal witness of same, but we won't get into that here.)
