Quote mining is taking snippets out of context to imply the opposite of the original author's intentions.

If a quote is consistent with an author's main argument, it's legitimate.

Because in college we found it humorous to play jokes on my poor friend Mike in such a "geekish" fashion. Of course had I known he would eventually become a trial lawyer I would have played a lot more tricks on him ;-)
