Religion may hinder Romney in '08
Chicago Sun Times ^

Posted on 04/28/2006 1:47:54 PM PDT by SDGOP

Prominent, respectable Evangelical Christians have told me, not for quotation, that millions of their co-religionists cannot and will not vote for Romney for president solely because he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If Romney is nominated and their abstention results in the election of Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's just too bad. The evangelicals are adamant, saying there is no way Romney can win them over.

The Jesus of Mormonism is not eternal; he became a god

Oh please Jmouse007, you are spreading misinformation!

Jesus was God in the OT he was Jahovah!

No matter how a religion is started, it must be judged by its current practitioners, and how that religion transforms them.

That is the "Red Jacket" standard, named after the chief of the Seneca.

By that standard, mainstream Mormons, or reformed Mormons meet a very high standard.

Some religions extend so far back in time that their origins are lost to us. The "Red Jacket" standard is fair to all religions, both those of ancient origin, and those of more recent extraction.

I won't vote for him because he is a poor governor. The Dems lead him around by the nose.

I support the "Red Jacket" standard for religion. By any standard, all other religions are false, so we would separate into quarreling factions. The measure of a religion is whether its origin is true, false, or hidden in the depths of time. It's measure is the behavior of its current day adherents.

"Brother, we are told that you have been preaching to the white people in this place. These people are our neighbors; we are acquainted with them; we will wait, a little while and see what effect your preaching has upon them. If we find it does them good, makes them honest and less disposed to cheat Indians, we will then consider again what you have said."

By that standard, the Mormons do very well. You do not have to believe their religion, nor to believe in the faith of the Muslims, Jews, Baptists, or Catholics. Just note the virtue in the modern practioners.

About the same time the Joseph Smith Jr. was born, a variation of Islam grew out of the desert, that rejected all knowledge that was not contained in the Koran or hadith. I would seek my allies among the followers of Joseph Smith Jr, rather than among the followers of the Wahabi.

"Why do you keep trying to paint me and other LDS with the dingy harry brush?

He is NOT the norm!"

I'm in Vegas, I've encountered others like him. For me, he is enough "the norm" that I just stay away. After you have been burned 4 or 5 times, you finally learn.

"Just note the virtue in the modern practioners. "

That would be the problem.

In case you don't know, Vegas is a Mormon town. And I've had serious problems with the devote ones more than the Jack Mormons.

Good post, Jmouse. Re my post 203, America in general and FReepers in particular needs to know these things. Most in America used to know them.

Again, re my post 203, you make these theological points, but where is their origin? Joseph Smith, of course, and his Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price.

The subject of Mormonism stands or falls with Joseph Smith. Either he is a true prophet or a false one.

Anyone who has taken the time to do a serious research on his life and his doctrines, has very little to zero confidence in ANYBODY who swallows the Mormon line.

And that includes Mitt Romney. Just to take one "for instance," how in the world can somebody who believes that Jesus Christ came to Central America to speak to the Indians of Central America, whom he views as the lost tribes of Israel (according to Joseph Smith's golden plates), be trusted to lead this country.

If he is stupid enough to believe this, and a ton more of the "prophet's" stuff equally as wacky, he'll believe anything.

fastcoyote has no meaning at all, just saw it somewhere.

Look, you are implying that I'm some awful person who attracts bad people. Trust me, the details would prove you wrong. But I don't want any retribution from Mormons here in Vegas, so no more details forthcoming.

Exactly. That shows how we can distinguish between two religions, both of which started at nearly the same time.

Now some Christians believe that G-d, rather than sending another prophet, sent his Son. Further, he was so limited that he had to have that Son be born of a woman, but just so that he could confirm the prejudices of the day, he had that woman be a virgin (but only in the greek, in the Hebrew scripture, that verse doesn't refer to a virgin).

Then the Jews have their beliefs. The Parsees have theirs. The Sikh have theirs. The Hindu theirs. The Buddhists theirs. The Shinto theirs.

See: We all have our share of wacky beliefs. The Red Jacket standard is a common rule that allows us to evaluate them in practice.

The reason I wouldn't vote for him is because he has not taken a pro-life stand while governor of MA. My gut tells me that he is pro-life because he's a Mormon, but he put his views behind him so that he could get elected governor in MA. And not only that, he got a crazy bill passed recently that makes it against the law for anyone in that state to not carry health insurance. The guy is not a conservative.

Well said. This has nothing to do with his being Mormon.
