Not sure of the historical fact, but my Dad, who was there, said he heard Patton say just this. He was in the 5th Armored, fought in the Hurtgen, ended up twiddling his thumbs on the Elbe for 2 weeks at the end of the war.
For those who insist that we should have gone after the Russians, maybe so. The the argument has some serious flaws including the will to win, the practicality of using Nukes and the destruction of the German logistics systems.
