Fire and Ice
by Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Fire and Rain
by James Taylor

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I woke up this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

I’ve been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it’ll turn your head around
Well, there’s hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.

oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now

Yes, yes, I know about all that. I'm not Amish. I went to public school. I've heard all about the geologic timetables, the Big Bang, the comet that killed the dinosaurs, etc ad nauseum ...

I stand by my beliefs, and I believe Genesis chapter 1.

"the moon is also moving away from the earth a little bit each year too."

"So, are the tides getting a little bit lower each year too?"

I would imagine so, but we are talking pretty tiny amounts Im sure. Im guessing probably not signifigant measurable amounts for millions of years.

My favorite two answers to the whole age of the Earth thing:

(1) God's day is as long as God decides that it is. His day might last one Earth day, one year, or 1,000,000,000 years. This is esp. plausible when you consider that God obviously had "days" before the Sun and Earth were created. In other words, don't take the term "day" literally.

(2) The Earth really has only been around for 5,000 or so years. It was just created old. In other words, when God created the stars, sun, Earth etc., He created a history for them, too. Why? Maybe it was more fun. Maybe He thought it would be funny to watch us ponder the issue. What, you don't think God has a sense of humor? Just look at the duckbilled platypus...

No, you believe in one, extremely limited, interpretation of Genesis chapter 1.

Death Star

Good evening, ...., it's for you
Hanging in the stars, suspended from the dark
Life is long and heavy like a shadow on a spark and it will blow
Massive killer orb hovering around
Looking for a spot to blast the good guys on the ground before they know
What hit them from above

It's the death star, something so incredible
Death star, something indestructible
Death star, massive and maniacal
Death star, teeny weeny vulnerable hole

Somewhere deep inside shifty to the core
The tank is full and fuelled
By the dark side of the force that makes it go
To and fro
Killing

Black hearted ball roll the devils dice
Destroy it one more time cause it's so good they built it twice
But now no more
No more, no more

It's the death star, something so incredible
Death star, something indestructible
Death star, massive and maniacal
Death star, teeny weeny vulnerable
Death star, something so incredible
Death star, something indestructible
Death star, massive and maniacal
Death star, teeny weeny vulnerable hole

Goodbye, death star
You were the largest weapon, ever manufactured.

No, you believe in one, extremely limited, interpretation of Genesis chapter 1.

I don't deny that. I believe in God, and I believe in the Bible. There's no comparison between Genesis and Darwinism. I could reinterpret Genesis, or any other part of the Bible, until I'm blue in the face. The truth is out there somewhere, so it might as well be the way it was written.

Besides, I don't think even God is patient enough to spend billions of years building the Earth to get to His greatest achievement - you and me.

"Besides, I don't think even God is patient enough to spend billions of years building the Earth to get to His greatest achievement - you and me."

Why not? How do you claim to know His thoughts and motivations?

Also, isn't it strangely prideful to claim that we're it - the top of the heap? Maybe we humble humans are NOT his end goal, or highest achievement - maybe we're just an intermediate step along the way...... I certainly don't claim to know.

You don't believe in an omnipotent god?

Maybe you should read the Bible. It doesn't look like you do.

The Bible is a book, written down by men (whether or not it is inspired by God, the hand of man produced it). It has been translated multiple times, from earlier translations, with the verbage tweaked to meet the politics/beliefs of the day. I don't trust the human authors to have any more insight to God's will than anyone else...

You're saying that you believe God to lack the necessary force of will to take as much or as little time as He desires to create the universe. This is not an omnipotent being you believe in.

"The Earth will be consumed by the sun as it expands into a red giant passed our orbit several billion years from now."

If a car passing your house is passed by another car as it goes past your line of sight, you will only see the one car pass as the passing car is hidden by the car going past your house until both cars are past.

Well, since you don't take the Bible seriously then we have nothing further to talk about.
