After the ride, the President's motorcade is seen leaving the Santa Rosa mountains.
The Santa Rosa Mountains rise like a knife blade from the floor of the Anza-Borrego Desert over a mile into the sky. The mountains are rugged and are designated as wilderness.
The Santa Rosa Mountains as seen from the Salton Sea. There is a National Wildlife Refuge on the southeast side of the sea (where the ashes of my first German Wirehaired Pointer, Jack, were scattered). It was renamed for Rep. Sonny Bono after his untimely death, and is now the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. During his years in Congress, Sonny Bono worked tirelessly to save the Salton Sea.
Snow geese which stop over at the Salton Sea wildlife refuge during their annual migrations. Among the great privileges of my life was to be at the refuge before dawn several times to see the snow geese arrive. They form a huge spiral of descending birds as they fly in to land. They honk continuously, squabbling over their own patch of territory, and take some time to settle in on the ground.
A California sunset over the Santa Rosa Mountains.
