Reluctantly, it seems.

I guess the folks in South Carolina have nothing better to do than mind other peoples' business...

Apparently freedom in a free country means that the country has the right to ban sex, if that is the will of the majority. Does the Bible say the sex toys are evil? Not that this is an issue of a state religion or anything.

What business is it of yours what other folks do if it doesn't affect you?

If the legislature is merely enacting the will of the people ... I guess I don't understand your comment. What you're calling "nanny-statism" I simply call self-rule.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Suppose the eating of Barbecue were made a felony. Would that be just "self-rule"?

Interesting that one finds a fair amount of support for the right to tyranny in the name of democracy on a site called FreeRepublic.

I truly had no idea how widespread the 'majority rule' BS had spread until I came to FR. It is scary.

I think the original ideals of our country have been largely lost on both the Right and the Left.

Yep, And until the 'two party' system stops working we won't see any change. - Taking turns on who gets to prohibit what just sends us further down the communitarian road.

The only political parties that seem to support such things are both on the fringe and full of fringe types. If I mention to my friends, regardless of whether they be "liberal" or "conservative," that the sole purpose of government is to protect liberty, since all other actions by it infringe that liberty," I get either an uncomprehending look or outright laughter.

Every now & then we get a little reminder [like New Orleans] of what will happen to liberty in a real crisis. Our friends with their heads in the sand are due for a big shock about putting trust in government.

Are you saying that the citizens of South Carolina cannot be allowed to decide how they will live? I'd like to know why not.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You are beyond belief! Your idea of allowing the citizens to decide is to tell them what they cannot do in their own bedroom. There are supposed to be limits on majority rule, otherwise we have the world's worst form of government, a pure democracy.

As you know, the constitution is not an exhaustive list of rights but rather puts limits on the powers of government.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Obviously the problem is that some Freepers are incapable of understanding limits on the power of government. Here is a clue folks, there is nothing in the constitution about the right of South Carolinians to eat grits. Try assuming the power to outlaw grits and you will receive an education real quick.
