Bloomberg Reveals a Rifle in His Past

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a leading advocate of stricter gun control, said yesterday that there was nothing wrong with owning a gun for hunting. In fact, he said he even had one himself as a teenager.

Mr. Bloomberg told listeners on his weekly radio program on WABC-AM that he participated in riflery at a Boy Scout camp, and that his parents later allowed him to own a rifle while he was growing up in Medford, Mass.

"When I was 15 or so, I had a .22-caliber rifle, but I used it only at a range, and you know there's nothing wrong with that," the mayor said. "Part of my hearing's gone because of it."

Mr. Bloomberg is scheduled to meet with more than a dozen mayors from across the country at Gracie Mansion on Tuesday to discuss ways to stop illegal gun trafficking and reduce gun violence. Mr. Bloomberg has made combating illegal guns a priority in his second term in office.

The mayor said yesterday that he had no problem with people who own guns legally and use them for recreation.

"Believe this or not, I am a defender of the Second Amendment," Mr. Bloomberg said. "I see nothing wrong with people having guns. But that doesn't mean you can have a gun everyplace. And concealed weapons or even weapons out in the open in big cities, in city streets, does not make a lot of sense to me."

The mayor added that people with children in their homes should not keep guns. "That's like waving a red flag in front of a kid," Mr. Bloomberg said. "Guns are very dangerous things, and the big problem we have is there's an enormous number of guns in the hands of criminals sold illegally."
