It was Larry Johnson's groups of lunatics.
Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity

David MacMichael, Linden, VA
Raymond McGovern, Arlington, VA
But McGovern, who now works in an inner-city outreach ministry in Washington, said officials who blow the whistle would be performing a higher service.
"It goes against the whole ethic of secrecy and going through channels, and going to the [inspector general]. It takes a courageous person to get by all that, and say, 'I've got a higher duty,'" he said.

AP: "The 25-member group, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, composed mostly of former CIA analysts along with a few operational agents, is urging employees inside the intelligence agency to break the law and leak any information they have that could show the Bush administration is engineering the release of evidence to match its penchant for war."
To all: in piecing together Mary McCarthy's connections to numerous other parties to the leaks and scandal-mongering of the left, let's look for every possible way in which she and Dana Priest have interlocking connections with the people who brought us Pflamegate, NSAgate, Prisongate, etc. etc. The names of Sandy Burglar, Richard Clarke, Rand Beers, Larry Johnson, Ray McGovern, Joe Wilson, and similar charlatans have been popping up all over the place.
It may seem like a mere tangent for discussion, but I suspect when she went back into the CIA after being out of government, she sought and obtained the senior position in the IG's office of the CIA with the SPECIFIC PURPOSE of becoming the "deep throat" of the hate-Bush mongerers of VIPS, Pflamegate, etc. She wanted to both coalesce and organize the anti-Bush officials still within the CIA and become (she hoped) the secure conduit of their info and attacks to MSM.
Remember that she was out of government (left in the NSC) in the summer of 2001 and would seem to have had a future path of liberal foundations and think tanks, academic fellowships, etc. Yet, in a most curious manner she returns to the CIA a couple of years later, still under the hated Bush administration, to take a high position in the most sensitive IG's office, where she would be privy to all kinds of sensitive internal investigations and secrets.
Maybe she was just hankering to serve her country again, yeah right.....
It may not seem to matter to freeper investigations of particular threads of background of Mary McCarthy and others around her, but I think that an overarching hypothesis that she was actively seeking to sponsor and coordinate the anti-Bush forces from high within the CIA, and that's why she went back, may lend energy and focus to our efforts.
One of the articles about her post-government life after 2001 had a friend mentioning that Mary McCarthy was thinking of pursuing "public interest law" as a new career. That's usually lefty-speak for working on 'progressive' causes....
A working hypothesis: Mary McCarthy went back into the CIA, against all odds (how many former officials return like that, and especially under an administration that they hate), specifically to sponsor and coordinate anti-Bush forces from within.
Again, you may think it doesn't matter to have that more general 'conspiratorial' hypothesis when we already know some of the outlines of what she did do, but I think it's helpful to consider how these traitors think about things when looking for overall patterns of their behavior.
