The Mission: Waging War and Keeping Peace with America's Military
by Dana Priest
ISBN:0393010244 (More details...)

Synopses & Reviews
Publisher Comments:
Walk with America's generals, grunts, and Green Berets through the maze of unconventional wars and unsettled peace. Four-star generals who lead the military during wartime reign like proconsuls abroad in peacetime. Secretive Green Berets trained to hunt down terrorists are assigned to seduce ruthless authoritarian regimes. Pimply young soldiers taught to seize airstrips instead play mayor, detective, and social worker in a gung-ho but ill-fated attempt to rebuild a nation after the fighting stops. The Mission is a boots-on-the-ground account of America's growing dependence on our military to manage world affairs, describing a clash of culture and purpose through the eyes of soldiers and officers themselves. With unparalleled access to all levels of the military, Dana Priest traveled to eighteen countries—including Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Colombia, Kosovo, Indonesia, and Nigeria—talking to generals, admirals, Special Forces A-teams, and infantry troops. Blending Ernie Pyle's worm's-eye view with David Halberstam's altitude, this book documents a historic and thought-provoking trend, one made even more significant in the aftermath of September 11 as the country turns to its warriors to solve the complex international challenges ahead. 16 pages of b/w photographs.
Review:
Dana Priest's revealing, close-up look...is especially timely as we view the challenges of the post-9/11 world. (Richard Holbrooke)

I can't read through the over 1500 posts at the moment, but I found a couple of articles, which may or may have already been posted to this thread, but they contain good info about Mary O'Neill McCarthy:

TEXT: BERGER APPOINTS MCCARTHY SPECIAL ASSISTANT FOR INTELLIGENCE, 17 June 1998

http://www.fas.org/irp/news/1998/06/98061701_tpo.html

Mary McCarthy had been Director of Intelligence Programs on the
National Security Council Staff since July 1996. Previously, said the
White House, Mrs. McCarthy served as the National Intelligence Officer
for Warning from 1994-1996 and as the Deputy National Intelligence
Officer for Warning from 1991-1994. She began government service in
1984 as an analyst in the Directorate of Intelligence of the Central
Intelligence Agency.

Mary O'Neil McCarthy: Fired CIA Leaker, Clinton Spec. Assistant (This one lists her duties)

http://colombia.indymedia.org/news/2006/04/40988.php

i. To oversee analysis of intelligence from all sources which might provide warning. In particular, he should be alert to alternate interpretations within the community and assess these with a view to the need for issuance of warning. He should encourage consultation and substantive discussion at all levels in the Community.

ii. To recommend to the Director or Deputy Director of Central Intelligerce the issuance of warning to the President and National Security Council, and to ensure the dissemination of such warning within and by the organizations of the Intelligence Community. When time is of the essence, the National Intelligence Officer may issue such warning directly to the President and the National Security Council, with concurrent dissemination to the Director and Deputy Director of Central Intelligence and senior officers of the Intelligence Community.

.... and more ( see link above)

=====

She clearly had access to highly classified information, the release of which endangers national security and she released it for political purposes. This IS a crime. I hope they will prosecute her to the full extent of the law.

Time Magazine had an article, where they mentioned that other investigations are on-going about other leaks.

How a CIA Leaker Got Axed

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1186406,00.html

"Several other investigations into leaks to reporters are currently underway in Washington, including one to discover who told New York Times reporters about the Presidentially ordered National Security Agency secret program to tap domestic calls to suspected terrorists without obtaining warrants beforehand."
