I was at Duke 30 years ago. "Same as it ever was".

Thank you. This notion that the college students are out of control and something must be done just irritates me.

College students that go away for school have always drank and been rowdy - that's just part of the college experience.

This reminds me of when the Bush twins were charged with underage drinking. Someone in the media tried to claim that their "obvious alcohol problem" was a "cry for help". Geesh - they were just normal college students having a good time.

Yeah well what you have today are the neo-prohibtionists like MADD. They started out with the noble goal of preventing teenage deaths due to drunk driving. Except it's morphed into total prohibition until you're 21.

They got the drinking age for everything raised to 21 and then they started prosecuting the hell out of the universities over under-age on-campus drinking including holding them legally liable for any injuries.

We used to have "keg on the quad" almost every Friday on Duke's West campus where we were far away from the Durhamites and would only bother other students. Some kids did drink too much on occasion (they could walk back to the dorm instead of driving) but the ones with half a brain quickly learned that being hung-over on Sunday mornings really sucked. Anything that got out of hand was quickly quashed by the Duke cops who knew how to handle it.

So the parties get forced off campus right into Trinity park where they're bound to annoy the neighbors and the Durham PD gets called. Those people who buy a house next to a university and expect perfect peace and quiet remind me of the people who buy a house next to the airport and then file suit about the noise.
