i'm sure duke isn't as bad as some schools (eg U of Wisc), but the alcohol situation is really crazy there.

Alcohol problem starts way before college...

i don't think this has caused the level of anger that was caused by the rodney king tapes.
those tapes caused a visceral response--even white police officers were upset.
i think we might see a march and some smashed windows in durham, but i doubt if much more will happen.

Maybe they should bring in Chief Moose to help out.

What the cops SHOULD be doing is lowering the hammer on her pimp and boyfriend (who may be one and the same person) to find out how many dates she had before the dance gig and whether or not any of them asked for specialty sex acts. The cops have plenty of leverage on these guys - all they have to do is threaten to scrutinize them and put them out opf business if they don't cooperate.

The development of this case presents a perfect storm of the damage that the political correctness of not looking at an alleged rape victim's activities does when it meets the electoral agenda of a politician who's a dim bulb in the first place.

The attorney on Abram's show said that the police (I've read they were detectives in other articles) did not notify Duke or the students' attorneys that they were going into the dorms and questioning the students. Neither did they did not have warrants.

They did notify the Duke Police Department but didn't notify the students' attorneys.

Police Attempt To Question Students In Duke Rape Investigation

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Duke associate vice president for campus safety and security Aaron Graves said two police detectives spent over an hour at Edens Residence Hall Thursday night in an attempt to question students as part of their ongoing investigation. Graves said that the detectives didn't have search warrants and had contacted the Duke Police Department before their visit.

The cops' little adventure late yesterday into the dorms speaks volumes about the state of this case. This was unethical, but no surprise. The cops know those guys are all represented.

And it certainly lends credence to the theory that the cops are the ones who sent the bogus email yesterday.

Showing up to do a search and interrogation with no warrant and no notice to defense counsel is a junior varsity move. Smacks of desperation to me.

On the contrary, the reason for the press conference this morning was to diffuse the volatility in Durham. The city is going to boil over if this "non case" continues to stir up the citizens.

Or even Chief Wiggum!

I thought the detectives were part of the police department. So why would they have had to notify the police? Who sent them?

I was at Duke 30 years ago. "Same as it ever was".

Thank you. This notion that the college students are out of control and something must be done just irritates me.

College students that go away for school have always drank and been rowdy - that's just part of the college experience.

This reminds me of when the Bush twins were charged with underage drinking. Someone in the media tried to claim that their "obvious alcohol problem" was a "cry for help". Geesh - they were just normal college students having a good time.

Nifong's stonewalling the team's attorneys to have access to PUBLIC records is beyond the pale. Would his conduct be enough to get him disbarred?
