Honestly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. When I've been in the park, I've seen idiots chasing a cub for a better picture. News flash, if there's a cub, Mama Bear will be somewhere nearby & she ain't gonna be happy. She can run faster than you, and she can climb trees, too. Visitors come into bear territory acting as if they're in a friggin' Disney movie. These ARE NOT tame, trained bears!
You nailed it.
What a horrible way for anyone to die...let alone a child.
"These ARE NOT tame, trained bears!"
I've had em' try to get into the trail shelter at night. When I used to hike up in Cherokee Natnl' Forest I just carried a gun for the dopers and the bears.
"a friggin' Disney movie"
...Which is where most of these idiots learned what they know about bears.
I always pack a .44 when I'm in bear country. I would never want to use it.
This is heartbreaking, horrific, tragic.
It is also why I am perfectly happy to stay in cities, thank you.
I figure my ancestors put their time in dealing with wild animals trying to kill them, and they worked hard to get out
of 'nature'. I have no desire to experience, now, what they gladly left . Bears, mountain lions, sharks...none of them can eat you if you don't go where they live looking for Disney.
Watch nature tv, or go camping with Ted Nugent.
