"A question to all Bushbabes: Does anyone know why GWH Bush choose to live in such an regular home? Surely, with the Bush money they could have lived in a more exclusive home. Did Prescott Bush keep tight reins on the family money? Was GWH determined to make his own money and not be beholden to dad?

Also, does anyone know what kind of house GWB and Laura lived in before he became governor? Has the ranch in Midland been their primary home since marriage?"

After Bush 41 graduated from Yale, he packed up Barbara (and 2 year old George W) and moved to Texas. Determined to 'make it on his own', he refused to take any money from his family! In fact, when he and Bar arrived in Odessa (their first home in Texas), they lived in a run-down apartment (of sorts) and ended up sharing bathroom facilities with prostitutes (a mother and her daughter).

Bush 43 approached his finances in a manner similar to his father. He and Laura lived a typical middle class life until he earned his millions with the Texas Rangers. It wasn't until he decided to run for President that he and Laura purchased 'the ranch' and decided to build their dream home -- They wanted a refuge from what they knew would be a brutal campaign!

I read in the Dallas News tonite that Ann Richards has cancer of the esophagus. She is in the middle of chemo treatments.

It reminded me of some more history of GWB. I wish Ann well in the cancer thing, but she is a nasty piece of work. She viciously attacked her opponent in the dem primary when she decided to run for governor.

My dem friend was also a dear friend of that guy, Jim Mattox. She always ran his campaigns. Everyone knew he was gonna run for governor--he'd been a popular attorney general. Ann slipped in under the radar, double-crossed Jim and opposed him in the primary. She won, and my friend's dream of living in Austin and working for Mattox was shot.

Ann's opponent was Clayton Williams an old west Texas rancher guy. She beat him because he was foolish enough to refuse to shake her hand at a press event. Old west Texas guys don't like to shake hands with snakes -- she'd lied about him in the campaign. But it looked bad and he lost.

She seemed to be very popular and was considered unbeatable until you know who decided to run. Even Barbara didn't think he could pull it off.

We all thought she was an alcoholic but the press didn't touch it. I always said she and Molly Ivins drank breakfast together.

However, now that they both have cancer it is admitted in the press that they are 'recovering alcoholics.'
