A new poll shows Don Goldwater leading the list of Republican candidates for governor by a substantial margin, including conservative rival Len Munsil.
Goldwater is the nephew of the late Barry Goldwater, a longtime U.S. Senator from Arizona and the 1964 Republican candidate for president.
A poll of likely GOP voters by SurveyUSA shows Goldwater with 39 percent.
That is well ahead of other gubernatorial candidates.
Conservative advocate Len Munsil, viewed as a front-runner by many party leaders and business lobbyists, received just 10 percent.
Scottsdale businessman Mike Harris received 9 percent and former Santa Cruz County attorney and state judge Jan Smith Florez got 5 percent in the poll. Thirty-one percent in the survey were undecided.
Goldwater recently picked up the backing of state Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, a leading conservative immigration hawk.
Harris has garnered the backing of two groups looking to curtail illegal immigration and deny state benefits and services to illegals -- Arizona Border Watch and Protect Arizona Now. Harris also has the backing of former state Senate president John Greene, who dropped out of the governor's race earlier this year.
General election polls show substantial leads for Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano over Goldwater, Florez and Munsil.
Napolitano, a moderate Democrat, is generally popular with the business community and none of her potential GOP rivals have made much headway with the private sector.
Munsil, the former head of the conservative Center for Arizona Policy group, has the backing of Congressmen Trent Franks, Jeff Flake, Rick Renzi and John Shadegg.
There has been some speculation that Florez would soon drop out of the GOP primary race but her campaign manager Mark McPhilimy dismissed that talk and said she is moving forward in the race.
If she vetos the bill on arresting illegals for trespassing, she will be in big trouble.
Did you hear him on the radio this morning? He really stuck it to Janet and her inaction on getting the Guard on the border.
Goldwater is supported by Racist Vigilantes HE WILL NOT GET MANY VOTES in COCHISE CO. for this reason. We are tired of being the launching pad for every white supremacist that wants to come here with their hatred for people of color!
The KKK is alive and well in AZ, and it's name is Graf and Goldwater! I am one of the people who recently participated in a poll about Graf who said they would not vote for him for dog catcher, and his time spent at "Golf College" is not a ringing endorsement for a good politician. Cochise Co. has some serious issues to face, among them is Prop. 400 (endorsed by some Republicans who do not care about the good of Cochise County!)
THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE, Vigilantes have misappropriated funds from people who wanted the Gaza style private fences, what they got was what amounts to a livestock fence that will not keep illegals out! WHO GOT THEIR MONEY? Let's see how much the Vigilantes gave to Graf, Goldwater, Tancredo, and Gilchrist for their campaigns! I think stealing from people should be against the law and "a promise is a promise", some people gave BIG money in support of the walls, they go no wall just a livestock fence!! AND PLENTY of political glad handing with some highly suspicious politicians! Not all Cochise County residents are willing to go along with "White Power". I will be voting against it, and every true Conservative Republican should too! Just my opinion, I won't come back often to read your responses because I am out campaigning AGAINST the candidates who are using Vigilante Power to be elected! Shame on any of you who vote for RACISM and WHITE SUPREMACY. Cochise County should wake up before it's too late!
GOD HELP US ALL!
