Press conference now. The president is taking questions.
President: Asked about leaks says that after we liberated Iraq there were questions about the basis of the war and I declassified the document for a reason. I wanted people to see the truth and that's why I declassifed the document.
I thought I could declassify without jeopardizing
ongoing intel operations.
Question: Sec. Rice in March discussed security issues in Asia Pacific. People thought it was an effort to contain the China threat. Could you elaborate the admin's strategy to the Pacific issues.
President: We have worked hard to make sure relations with Japan, S. Korea and China are on firm footing and they are. The Japanese relationship is a close relationship and I'm personally fond of the Prime Minister and I've worked with him on a variety of issues. He's committed troops to Iraq; he believes democracy keeps the peace. We've worked close in Afghanistan.
The S. Korean issue is dominated primarily by N. Korea nad I made the decision early on to change the dynamics called the 6 party talks aiming to get people who have a stake with N. Korea to the table. We need a united voice with the N. Koreans. The N. Korean nuclear issue disturbs me but also the fact that people are being starved to death.
Thanks Peach!
I would have otherwise missed this!
Thanks!
President: The issue on most American's minds is the issue of China. The relationship with China is positive and complex. It's positive because we do have dialog and the Chinese leadership sit down and we have frank discussions about a variety of issues. Our side discusses fairness and trade and freedom of religion and human rights.
It would be helpful if the S. Koreans and Japanese had better relationships so we encourage more dialog between the parties.
Please take notes
I have to leave and pick up my youngest from school
Thank you for the extraordinary transcription service.
I'll TRY!
Peach is doing marvelously.
President: I believe it's important for Americans to see a society that is driven by consumer driven society in China. Meetnig will be a wide agenda.
FNC opts out, CNN still carrying.
Go to CNN.
FNC has dropped him in favor of two bozo commentators.
Question: I feel strongly about freedom although al so about human trafficing. Your admin takes a s trong stance against prostitution and combating sex trafficing. There is no evidence that criminalizing prostitution changes sex trafficing. Have you considered changing your mind about criminalizing sex prostitution?
President: Sounds like I'm dodging but you know more about it than I do. I'll call Candi; I thought we had a strong policy on this and addressed the UN and you'll have to talk with the secretary about it.
Prostitution question... silly.
On to USA's attempt to "democratize the world."
Oh-oh, the Prophet Mohammed.
Geeeeez.
"Give your people a chance to be free."
Question: Many see America's attempts to democratize ME, considering its the prophet Mohammed who established first democracy in the world (??), living among an equal among his people, giving any man or woman the right to vote, respect for all living, it parallels with our Constitution. How does the Iraq Study Group explore these striking similarities and educate Americans about democratic principals about Islam.
President: Islam has been hijacked. I'll pass on your comments to James Baker. You said something interesting. You said that people view America as imposing its beliefs. I harken back to what I said earlier.
You're GOOD.
REALLY GOOD.
Mo, just read all of Peach's posts.
when was islam not hijacked?
If GW thinks that, he's waaaay out of touch.
