This might actually be a good move for CBS, considering their only real competition is NBC and ABC. There are other news venues out there, but only the 3 traditional networks can reach the great unwashed who don't have cable.

Katie Couric could pull some viewers from NBC, and retain the existing CBS audience. So, as long as those two are competing in a 3-way race with ABC, and the real challenge is minimize the long-range historical trend down, it would be hard to blame Katie Couric for a complete collapse of CBS News.

Yes, CBS jumped the shark with Rather and Mapes. That was their swan song. Little Katie Koran is just a flapping little Marixist who will only attract liberal kool-air drinkers who want to listen to her anti-American swill.
