I can't seriously entertain the notion that a good double-layered fence won't significantly slow down the flow of illegals. Few are claiming that it would prevent every last one from getting across. Israel's experience with fences has shown that they are effective.

Even with stringent and strong enforcement, both with manpower, the strength of a double layered fence, and sheer technological wizardry, we'll slow it down, but we'll never cut the flow off entirely.

This notion of a impenatrable wall, real or imagined, is just a pipe dream.

It's not an all or nothing proposition. If the wall just cut illegal immigration to a trickle then it would be fine.

It's not like we have this same mentality on every other piece of legislation.

That's what Brownback told me in a town hall meeting, and I responded with, "The wall in Israel is doing a helluva good job." He shut up after that.

I'd say it would slow it way down. It's worked wonders in Israel.

Probably the biggest evidence of its effectiveness lies in the fact that the sellout politicians in Washington hate the idea.

Nice strawman. Even the Berlin Wall had escapes. We don't need to go that far.

If we make crossing the wall a 75 percent probability of getting caught, and seeking employment as an illegal a 50-50 chance of getting caught, then you have an 87.5 percent chance of getting caught. Since most border crossers have to pay a lot of money to coyotes, it makes it a poor investment - whereas now, the odds are, they won't get caught.

So we don't need to rise to your standard of an inpenetrable wall. Just one to signfiicantly slow the flow, when used in conjunction with additional enforcement within the country.

Considering what we have now equates with putting a band aid on a shotgun wound, build the fence.

That's why we need a minefield. Ike put in a mine field on the border between North and South Korea. Reagan expanded it and was able to cut the number of troops needed to keep the border secure. Ike’s minefield works much better than Israel’s fence.
