Exclusive: Qadhafi's 9/11 Fears
Time ^ | April 4 2006 | TIMOTHY J. BURGER

Will we be hit again? With ruins still smoldering at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, that was the question on the mind of every American in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. But it also appeared to have been a major concern of none other than Libyan strongman Muammar Qadhafi.

Qadhafi — who was behind the Pan Am 103 bombing that killed 270, as well as the 1986 bombing of a Berlin disco that killed three — was "hysterical" with fear that he'd be targeted by the U.S. for vengeance after the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, according to a newly declassified Sept. 20, 2001, cable from the U.S. Embassy in Egypt.

Concerned that the U.S. would attack Libya again. Qadhafi began to "call every Arab leader on his rolodex". U.S. embassy officials were told "that Qadhafi had sounded hysterical in his telephone call to [Jordan's] King Abdullah, as if only the King's personal intervention would prevent U.S. action."

The cable puts a new perspective on Qadhafi's renunciation of his nuclear weapons program in December 2003, after starting talks on the matter around the time U.S. bombs were beginning to fall on Baghdad in March. At the time, the Bush administration hailed Qadhafi's move as proof that its tough tactics against countries with weapons of mass destruction was working. But this cable shows that Qadhafi was gravely concerned about American intentions in the new global war on terrorism at least 18 months before the Iraq war.

And getting our Pelosis and Kennedys etc. out there talking is a better war strategy for our enemies than preparing their own soliders for battle. When are we going to learn?

It may put a new light on it for Time, but around here we knew since back then that Gadhafi was in a panic. It was reported that Berlusconi (I think it was Berlusconi) said that Qadhafi called him on the phone and told him he turned over his WMD program because he saw what happened to Iraq and he was afraid the same thing would happen to him. But the press ignored that because it demonstrated that President Bush was right.

Didn't mean to imply that you did say ground forces. I wasn't sure which you meant (I gave you air, and disagreed about ground).

I am not arguing that we gained nothing. I am arguing that we could have gained the same thing without fruitless nation-building.

BS line from the MSM. He saw what was happening in Afghanistan 2 months after the attack and he remembered what happened in '86 with Reagan.

And, I am arging mistakes on the ground.

Not enough troops, disbanding the Army, de-Baathification, etc caused our problems in Iraq.

There was no way to get rid of Saddam without the US occupying Iraq for a time. Zarqawi and al-Qaeda feed and grow off of insibility and the lack of security forces. If we just got rid of Saddam and left Zarqawi would own western Iraq and Iran would own southern Iraq and the middle of the country would be a violent waste land.

I agree with the first two paragraphs.

But I am for taking it over, carving it up, and letting them kill each other. We could hang out in "Kurdistan" or in the oilfields in the south.

I couldn't care less about the land in the middle.

That would be quite the feat, given that we've already gone in and taken all of Libya's WMD.

Correct!

[A spokesman for Mr Berlusconi said the prime minister had been
telephoned recently by Col Gaddafi of Libya, who said: "I will do
whatever the Americans want, because I saw what happened in Iraq, and
I was afraid."]
