I suspect that due to causality issues one cannot travel back to before time machines were invented...

Either the people in the future aren't smart enough OR we manage to blow ourselves to pieces befre we figure it out. OR a new ice age comes and kills us all.

What makes you think that they'd want to visit here? If I had a time machine I'd travel 6000 years into the past so I could observe dinosaurs in their natural environment.
