You are not far off. In fact, when time travellers inadvertently prevented the death of JFK and saw the aftermath -- his impeachment and removal from office following an affair with a mob boss's girlfriend -- they captured him as he was being transported to a maximum security prison and explained the situation. This explains why no one was discovered at the grassy knoll: the shooter ceased to exist after firing the shot.
