‘George W Bush has Swedish ancestry’

STOCKHOLM: US President George W Bush has Swedish ancestry, the daily Svenska Dagbladet reported on Monday, quoting Swedish genealogists in the United States. “George W Bush and his family are extremely interested in this research. This represents their oldest known European roots,” David Emmi of the Swedish Colonial Society told the paper. Researchers traced Bush family ancestry through 10 generations to the 17th century, to a Maans Andersson, the society said. Andersson is believed to have left Gothenburg, in southwestern Sweden, in October 1639, arriving in the colony of New Sweden in Delaware a few months later, according to the research. The Swedish Colonial Society was founded in 1909 to maintain historical material on Swedes and Finns in the US. AFP

Eh, not quite. Der Fuhker's delusions incorporated many aspects of pre-Christian pagan beliefs of the ancient Germanic barbarian tribes and elements of Scandinavian Nordic mythology and a sprinkling of Christianity just in case the Christian Germans don't appreciate being forced to worship some ancient, obscure BS by the funny man with a mustache.

Oh yeah, Uff Da.

Ping to the Swedish Ping List.

(BTW, I'm breaking my Lenten "posting fast" to come out of lurk for this one.)

Andersson is believed to have left Gothenburg, in southwestern Sweden, in October 1639, arriving in the colony of New Sweden in Delaware a few months later. . . .

My great-great-whatever-grandfather was on the same boat! I'm series.

Peter Gunnarsson Rambo also was on the second voyage of the Kalmar Nyckel and was one of the founders of the New Sweden colony along the Delaware River. My mother's mother was Grace Rambo Clark. (My father's parents, the Henricksons, were more recent arrivals from Sweden, coming about a hundred years ago.)

My wife and daughter and I are taking a vacation to Philadelphia around the Fourth of July, and while there, we want to see the Swedish Colonial sites. I understand there's even a full size replica of the Kalmar Nyckel:

So, Rambo now is Swedish too?

Yes, in a rather creative sort of way. My ancestor, Peter Gunnarsson, came from the Ramberg ("Raven's Mountain") section of Gothenburg when he left Sweden in 1639. When he arrived in New Sweden, he decided to take a new name for the New World. Patronyms like Gunnarsson were very common, and he must have wanted something different, something that would remind him of home. So he created the name "Rambo," made up of two Swedish words and meaning, "Raven's Home" or "Raven's Nest."

See the webpage on Peter Gunnarsson Rambo.
