*** Furthermore, anyone who questions the received opinion is a crackpot.***
Not really. When such questions are raised the crackpots immediatly migrate to that position. the questions raised then become lost in a sea of rants fron the crack pots.
A very fine example is 9-11. Do a web search and you will see some real loonies claiming all sorts of "U. S. government complicity" in the attacks.

The conspiracy theorists err in trying to fit the facts into their theories of secret societies and combinations working for either the suppression of the working masses (Marxist) or one world government (rightist). However, the political leadership of the country and the MSM are as committed to hiding or obscuring information that does not fit whatever is the received opinion on a particular matter. Additionally, when information comes up that does not fit a particular prejudice of theirs, as when the "Beltway sniper" turned out to be a black Muslim rather than a redneck survivalist disproved their pet theory that only conservative white males are capable of terroristic violence, the matter is soon pulled out of national news prejudice.
