I live in an area with thankfully very few illegals. Some workers here are Eastern European, but mostly American-born teenagers and high school graduates. When I moved here from Northern Virginia it was like night and day. In Virginia nobody speaks English and the quality of work is terrible. Here, even our painter is an educated American who makes a good living painting houses. Our electrician is an American who supports three kids and does incredible quality work at reasonable prices. Our floors were laid by Americans. Teenagers work in the stores and fast food outlets. It's what the rest of America used to be, and we are doing fine. I don't need to save $100 on my next landscaping or painting job. I would rather have all these people working and paying taxes and abiding by the law.

But even people here are seeing the signs, especially with the big homebuilders. They're hiring more and more illegals for construction and finishing work, driving down prices for local firms and forcing them to cut wages and benefits and even fire people. This is nothing but greed on the part of the builders. They are not passing the savings on to home buyers.

I'm with you. I'll clean my own toilets, thankyou, and hire a kid from down the street if I need a job done. Nobody needs to hire an illegal, period.
